regular

i caught a 9 and 8 lb trout last year on the regular chartreuse down south, using an 1/8 oz jig head. casting into four feet of water, and stair stepping it down to 15 feet on a ledge. i think they were in the 8 footish stair step. big trout eat whatever is on the dinner table, find them and feed them. big or small bait they will eat it, i don't buy into the big trout only eat big baits. my experience tells me otherwise.

pictured are an 8lb caught on a small tail/jig, you can see the little jon on the side of one fish, and the down south tail hanging out of the mouth of the other.
i've since shaved my stash. :texasflag

I fish them a lot and personally prefer the super model, as I think it has better action on the 1/8 ounce jig heads I typically throw. But I also agree trout of all sizes will eat anything when they’re feeding, big or small - I’ve caught tons of big trout over the years on tiny crappie jigs when they’re feeding on glass minnows.

I like the supermodels this time of year and the burner shads during the hotter months and im always on a 3/16th jig head unless its super skinny (knee deep). Do yourself a favor and buy a pack of lil john xl's. They dont look like they do much but the trout and reds love them. A couple of friends and myself have been on a hot streak with them.

David I have to say on the tails it's personal preference, but the little jons are definitely fish catchers. Notice the chartreuse little jon on the one fish to right. I use Tidal surge split tails, little jons, and down south interchangeably, whichever one is in front of me when I open my wade box or look under my leaning post seat. Most important is locating fish, winter time they are hungry and will eat most all offerings.

I've been lazy as of recent and working, was waiting on cold weather but it brought rain with it and freshened up my backyard. I guess I'll have to venture past my local gravy train for a couple weeks more, and go hunt them down. Now if I can just get my lazy happy arse out of bed. :texasflag

Fish the super size on a smaller and lighter jig head than you normally throw. Keep it swimming in the strike zone longer, slower, and looking more natural with less lead when the water is winter cold.

Lil John’s are a favorite of mine. I like the big models too. Their shape causes a very subtle glide action when jerked and when they’re on the fall. Very different action from the other soft bait shapes.

I fish the larger ones in the summer with no issues. My only complaint about DSLs, is that they are very soft and even on screwlock jigheads, only last 2-3 fish. I used the same chickenboy 4 inch shrimp last weekend for about 40 trout. The 26.5 inch red was what ended it.

The supermodels have held up great for me. I had an epic day last year where I caught my limit and the 2 other guys limit that were with me of good quality trout all on one lure. It was beat to hell and I had to reposition it quite a bit but it held up like a champ. The burner shads have been 2 fish max for me before they need to go. I wonder if their is some inconsistency in the durometer of the plastics.

The super model is not a big bait. I make a number of my own soft plastics for trout because I cant get the size I want.. I have some 7 plus inch swim baits and 10 and 12 inch worm molds that I make in the colors I want looking for big trout. Ive caught 10in sand trout on a 10in ribbon tail worm. You just need to keep slinging the thing until you believe it will work in the back of your head. I'm honestly amazed more people don't throw big bass baits for trout.
