Dog for Girlfriend

5307 Views 60 Replies 50 Participants Last post by  Cat O' Lies
Hey everyone,

I need some advice. I would like to get my girlfriend a dog for her place as an early christmas present. She lives alone and is going to school and I would like to get her a dog that will keep her company as well as protect her if something was ever to happen.
She is good with dogs and loves boxers. And we both like labs and german shepards.
Which dog would be a good choice for her situation?
Also, where should I look for finding a quality pup?

Thx.

A weeny & a Stopper (I prefer .45 acp)

The weeny will wake her up when there is trouble, and the stopper will do the rest.
many time the best dog looks like the owner, please post pic of girl friend, that would help us help you
i'd recommend a labradoodle or maybe a goldendoodle. they are smart and mine atleast will bark his butt off then the door bell rings. he knows whats up. no sheading at all which is a plus for cleaning up. you can get smaller ones too. check them out.

He's a gorgeous dog! I would love to have one just like him.

Maybe someone could trim the hair around his eyes, but that's just my 2 cents. I'm sure he's used to the view.

The most insanely protective dogs I've ever known have been Norwegian Elkhounds. Of course it would probably protect your girl from you.
Get her a Mississippi Leg Hound. I hear they are extremely protective and friendly! :) Your GF would not lack for attention for sure.
I have a chessie, shepard and a curr. The curr is my favorite, but is not good with the neighborhood kids so it stays at my BIL's house. The chessie is great, but it's loyalty is to me and me alone. The shepard looks after everything and everyone, all the time. I would vote for female shepard.
I've had my Boxer for 6 years and he is a great dog. He is protective of the family but I think if we aren't home, he'd show criminals where all of our stuff is while leaping into their lap. He doesn't know where my fishing equipment is though. lol

Picking up large piles of poo probably won't be too appealing after awhile.
picking up poo is never appealing - not even the first time.
Come on Kyle, lab, lab, or lab, take your pick. LOL

Plus you get to take it duck hunting with you as well.
Totally misunderstood the title of your post. First thought was "isn't that illegal in Texas?".

Carry on.

First of all a student in an apartment has no need for a dog. Not enough time or attention can be given to the dog. You have to look at it like almost a child. She has to feed it, take care of it, go out with it to the restroom and there is no guarantee that the dog will defend her. This is not a good choice. It is a nice thought but a bad idea. If you are concerned about her safety get her a gun and teach her how to use it. It does not have the be fed. does not require shots, does not *** on your floor or pee, nor does it need walking. To put a dog in this situation is just not right for the dog or the lady. Like I said buy her a gun.

Oh, for a moment I thought you wanted to give me a dog for my girlfriend. And I was going to say DEAL!!
I thought the same thing!!
I gave my wife a Pit Bull now they both were lip stick....lol... Lab for sure...
I love boxers and think they are really good ole dogs. If I were to throw my vote in for a great dog that wont have to really be protective but will...I would suggest a Great Dane.

These dogs are the best natured dogs I have ever come across. I have owned three of them. They are well mannered, listen well and are protective of their owners but no so agressive that one would have to worry.

The downfall of this breed is they dont live very long and you really need to find a good breeder with good ethics.

I think a boxer is a good choice though...

I decided to try a new breed after the death of my last dane and went with a female bloodhound...What was I thinking!!?? LOL!!
