Dog for Girlfriend

5313 Views 60 Replies 50 Participants Last post by  Cat O' Lies
Hey everyone,

I need some advice. I would like to get my girlfriend a dog for her place as an early christmas present. She lives alone and is going to school and I would like to get her a dog that will keep her company as well as protect her if something was ever to happen.
She is good with dogs and loves boxers. And we both like labs and german shepards.
Which dog would be a good choice for her situation?
Also, where should I look for finding a quality pup?

Thx.

The larger the dog, the bigger the pile. In this case, bigger is not better. Go with a chiuaua.
You don't need a large dog for protection. For crooks any dog is scary enough. In an apartment you definitely don't need a Large dog. Picking up large piles of poo probably won't be too appealing after awhile. Did I say,"poo". LOL!!!
We have a papillion and love it. We took my daughter the day we got it and the dog picked her. You should do the same. Let the dog choose her like stated earlier by someone else.
Good luck!

I'd listen to Ox on this one.

If there's anyone that knows about having a "Dog for a girlfriend", it'd be him!
truer words never spoken(typed)!:rotfl:
I was asked what GSD meant.

Its short for German Shepard.
Don't do it! Seriously, this should strictly be her idea. There are a lot of responsibilities she may not be up to. She may wan't to go somewhere after school or sometime but can't because she has to go home and let the dog out or walk him. Most dogs need some exercise time, especially hyper dogs like shephards, border collies etc. Wan't to go somewhere for the weekend? Can't -No one to watch the dog. Also, if taken care of properly with vaccinations, heart worm prevention etc, runs hundreds of dollars a year besides the food.

If she comes up with the idea and wan'ts the responsibility that comes with it, then, as was mentioned, get a shelter dog.
dogs

I have had a few boxers they are great dogs but are a little hyper I have a english bulldog now and that is a great breed a little on high side but great dogs
If she wants a dog and is in the position (time, space, and finances) to have one, look on Petfinder for a shelter or rescue dog in your area.
I have a Chesapeake bay retriever and its incredible and very protective of me
Best dog I ever had was a lab/beagle mix (so I have been told). Found her 8 years ago. Looks like a yellow lab, but about 25 lbs. Loves people and is great with children, but barks at anyone that comes to the door, which should deter anyone from entering. If they do enter . . .

I have a Chow/Golden Retreiver mix. Chows are extemly protective of their owners/home . . . Much calmer than the lab/beagle . . . loves family and friends that she recognizes . . . Her menacing bark has scared many of friends that act up at my house. I am willing to bet that if an intruder did get into my house, she would take a chunk out of his *** . . .

I've had a dog or two for a girlfriend, LOL! I'd think about the maintenance needed for the breed you plan to get, also the living space that she has. Does she have a fenced yard? Does she have allergies? Doe she have ample time to spend with the dog? What about food costs? Some breeds inherit health issues, while mixed breeds almost never have inherited issues.
If she really wants a dog get ger a rescue that is already house trained.

Did someone say Ox's girlfriend was a dog or did I miss interpret.
i would recommend a great dane... they are lovely gentle giants, but still very protective of their owners
You can't go wrong with a weenie!
I'll second that. Ours is smart, funny as he77 to watch and play with and he has a pretty mean bark anytime there is a knock on the door or someone knew comes in.
