I'm pretty new to SLR photography and have a quick question about depth of field.

I know how to get a narrow DOF where the subject in the foreground is sharp yet the background is blurred.

But how do I take a picture where the subject might be in the background and i want it to be sharp and the foreground to be blurred? Is this possible? I have a Canon Rebel XS if that matters.
Thanks for any tips.

Use the same setup you use to get the out of focus background, just focus on the background subject.

Example: My Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 only has about 2 feet or maybe less that is in focus when I am shooting a softball player batting and I am at either the first or third base side of the field near the bag. If I miss the focus I get the chain link fence backstop in focus and the batter is soft and out of focus.
