Astros just beat St. Louis and Chicago has lost to Cincy. San Francisco is ahead 6-3 over San Diego in the 5th. So, it looks like Chicago is up by only 1/2 game over Houston and San Francisco. Might be a Wild Card Race instead of a Penant Race, but it's pretty exciting and is going to make these last few games a lot of fun to watch.

I am not foolish enough to believe that the 'Stros will win it all, but as long as the cubs stay home I'll be happy. Resign Beltran at all costs, get Clemens to return, hope Wade Miller and Andy Pettite rebound and I like our chances in '05. Nice knowing ya Jeff kent.

Did you hear that the Cubs have suggested that the Cardinals aren't trying to beat the Astros? That is one of the dumbest things I've heard all year. The Cubs don't need to be worrying about how other teams are playing. They just need to make sure that quit losing 2 of 3 to teams like the Mets down the stretch. The Mets!! After hearing about this, and since they lost to the Reds, I'm not worried about the Cubs. They are imploding. What was all that talk about Dusty Baker being a great manager? And the Giants have a tough schedule the rest of the way, but they have the X factor in Bonds. It is no longer a wise move to always walk him. The guys behind him have finally been driving him in, which they weren't doing enough of earlier in the season. I still like the Astros chances, though, especially if they can get win number 19 for the Rocket tonight. They just need to get him a couple more runs than he's had in his last two starts.

Even if Houston misses out on the postseason, who would have thought we would even be talking like this a month or so ago? You can't fault them for giving it their all down the stretch, even though they underachieved during the middle of the season. And how nice is it to see Carlos Beltran play? He's throwing guys out at third, at home, hitting triples, doing somersaults and should soon be only the third or fourth guy to be part of the 40/40 club. He's a complete player and is probably the smoothest runner I've seen in baseball. He barely looks like he's trying, but he's actually flying. Watching him leg out a triple is an absolute joy to watch. I just hope he's seen enough of Houston and likes the Astros enough to stay for a few more years.

what happened last time?

The last time we let a 100 RBI guy go we had our worst season in years (Moises Alou). If we sign Beltran, fine. Kent can go. If not, I think we should keep Kent for one more year. I know he is kind of a ***** but he is also a professional. Plus he will probably give us a hometown discount. Anyone who has a ranch in Texas can't be all bad.

No matter what happens, the Astros have come back has been tremendous fun. If we can just win 4 more...........

GO STROS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw the flip. WOW! What an effort! But the hometown call by the home plate umpire was the best part of the play. Dude was safe, I don't care which foot he touched home plate with. LOL With the Cubs imploding, and LA and SF playing each other th'e Stros have a legitimate shot.

Agree with the above, See ya Kent.

Go Astros!

Astros

I have to admit there are alot of people that know baseball very well on this site. Jeff Kent is a pretty good ball player but his stats have been diminishing the last few years. You would think for the money the STROS are paying him and also playing at Minute Maid park he would hit 50 homers and drive in 130 RBI's. I still think he is a good player but way over payed for the stats he produced lately and let's face it, he's not too bad defensively and he's not great either.
I say we drop Kent and use Viscaino at second full time next year and pick up a young skilled back up infielder capable of playing short or second. This would free up some money. Adam Everett is going to be back strong next year and do a great job. We absolutely need to do everything possible to resign Beltran. All of us can see the difference speed makes, just ask the Marlins. Everett and Beltran in the top of the line up sounds very scary to opposing pitchers. I sure wish Bagwell would renegociate his contract and give up some money to do what ever it takes to get Beltran and Clemens back. Imagine Clemens, Oswalt, Backe, Pettite, and Miller all healthy next year and the team chemistry if finally coming along.

Don't forget about Carlos Hernandez. Most of this year he has been building arm strength after shoulder surgery last year. I see him as being a very good pitcher in the next couple of years.
