Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish. Psalm 1:1-6 NIV

This psalm is a beautiful picture of how God cares for his own. They are like the lush growing tree that is planted right beside the source of its nourishment. There is no fear during drought (hard times) because it is so near the supply (God).

There is a warning that we should not live according to the advice of those who do not know God. There is a pattern of backsliding here. First we walk in their counsel, then we stand with them in sin, then we sit with them as mockers. (Compare this to the passage, in Ephesians I think, where we see a forward progression of sit, walk, stand. You'll need to look it up.)

There is an admonition to read, meditate and delight in God's word. (That's where we'll find guidance for our life.)

There is a promise of divine intervention in our life. (God's word will speak to us in our difficulties, and God himself will lead our way.)

This psalm is very rich in content. Meditate on it, you'll love it.
