Bantam,

I'm experiencing a little problem with my curado 100d.

Sometimes the reel just wants to let line out. For instance if I'm using a topwater and I go to twitch the rod, the spool will let out about 2-3 feet then stop. Does the same during casting( pre-cast). Though the problem isnt constant, I would like to know what I could do to fix it. I'm pretty sure a part needs to be replaced, but I dont know what part to buy.

Thanks,

Rob Schumske

The 100D has an anti-reverse do, in addition to a one way bearing, so this is somewhat perplexing. I have seen a couple where the anti-reverse dog has stuck "open" and the one-way (clutch) bearing is missing due to over-lube or really cold conditions.

Does the handle spin backwards, or does it just let out line?

If you don't want to send it in, send me a pm with your phone numbr and maybe we can figure it out over the phone.

A friend of mine is having a similar problem with his Chronarch. While running the boat, with the rod in the rodholder, the reel will release line, causing the lure to start flying all over the place. Not the most enjoyable scenario, as you can imagine. Anyway, he called FTU and they immediately knew what the problem was. It's the anti-reverse mechanism.

If the handle spins backwards it is the clutch (anti-reverse) bearing. 98% of the time, that bearing just needs to be cleaned, not replaced, unless it is really corroded. Also, like I mentioned before, the anti-reverse dog, must also be sticking "open", otherwise that could not happen.

The other thing to consider is the temperature. The clutch bearing can take a lot of heavy lube when it is warm, but in colder conditions, the lube won't allow the gear to work properly.

You should be able to fix it yourself in about 10 minutes:
-Take off the handle, and star drag (becareful not to lose the click pin out of the star drag).
-Remove the drag nut and drag washers.
-Tap the handle hard against you hand, or lightly on a wood surface to remove the
clutch tube (tube that is around the drive shaft under the spring washers).
-Now ther should be enough space between the drive shaft and clutch bearing to wedge a thin piece of cloth or paper towel in, to remove any excess grease and oil.
-Slowly turn the shaft to move the cloth around. You make have to repeat this a couple times to get as much of the lube out as you can.
-Replace the clutch tube and put one drop of light oil in the space between the bearing and tube while spinning the shaft.
-Reassemble the reel, and it should be good to go. At some point though, the reel needs to be taken down and the anti-reverse dog should be examined.

Good luck!
