This thread is sure to draw some heat but we haven't had a good croaker discussion in a long time so here goes. Feelings get religious on this subject quickly so let's try to keep it above the belt.

I only use live bait (croaker or other wise) when I take my 4 and 6 yr old boys fishing which is a few times each summer. The results have been lots of dead croaker, lots of hard heads and gafftop, a couple trout, a couple sharks and more dead croaker. The best trout day ever was a 4 fish stringer of 15-19" fish after a full morning of fishing. For me croaker have been no more of a killer bait than piggies or mullet.

From my experience banning croaker makes little sense other than to restore the croaker population which would be a good thing and may mean we would once again have a croaker run - anyone remember the golden croaker runs from years past?

I'm not saying croaker don't catch trout but banning their use as bait makes as much sense to me as banning hand guns - it's the people who use them that are the real problem.

For those who have had killer days using croaker do you think it mattered what you were throwing or just the fact you found a hungry school of trout?

Everyone get their popcorn....

There is already plenty of regulations on our fishing, start outlawing wich baits can be used and who knows what will be "illegal" next. You have to take conservation in your own hands, zero percent of trout survive from the ice chest just keep what you need and who cares how you caught em.

Croaker aren't any harder on trout spawn than pins or piggies but the're easier supplied for bait and I never hear of anyone wanting to ban pins or pigs for trout fishing.

Croaker are like any other bait, if you don't know how to use them, take care of them, or where to put them the results are the same...............

Did you fish this summer? I caught some of the biggest croaker I have ever seen, and as many as anyone wanted.

I think you should have to state what you will fish with when you buy your license....You can pick any bait....live bait...plug....plastic whatever, but you must use only that bait in that color for that year......The next time you buy your license you can change baits.....

Thats what limits are for. I can catch trout with a multitude of baits. Croaker may have a slight edge but I have to stop at ten. Five on the lower coast. The trout are just as dead if I use plastic, shrimp or croaker. I don't see the advantage, croaker die quicker, cost a fortune and the results are not that much different. If you can find them at all.

I believe the term ''fishing'' means to try and catch fish. I personally like to hang a fish and if it means using croaks so be it. I do fish with arties most the time but when one of those aries don't work I swap to something different. I like to make it real challenging and only use an empty hook, mind you with no plastic or feathers and such attached to it. This way when I come home empty handed and my arm about to fall off from all the casting I can pat myself on the back and smile at everybody about how hard I made it for myself and the extremes I went to be a real sportman. And if I start catching fish on just a hook I'll take the hook off and use line only that way I feel better about myself again and I promise you people will notice me. Lets just go all the way and get rid of our boats and r&rs use a coke can and line and we'll see how good we really are or aren't. Notice all the different atries at Academy, that's to improve your chances. To each his own within the law. As for the croakers, don't mix them with other types of live bait and they tend to stay alive longer.
