Hey guys I am a new member and am looking for some help planning a trip to Costa Rica. Has anyone fished the Osa area and have any recommendations on charters? We are looking to do 4 days offshore in Feb. Also, I have seen the ixtapa zihuatanejo area mentioned. Has anyone fished both areas and have a preference? I am not familiar with either area but am craving some good sportfishing! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Topaz, there are a few of us on the board who have fished with John and Mark of sportfishing unlimited out of Playa Zancudo.. They are from the Corpus area and have been fishing down there for 15+ years.. They're great fisherman, and will usually fish an hour or so longer than any of the other lodges.. There is a package deal or inquire about the do it yourself lodging.(read save $$)

Topaz,
Bret and Goags both highly recommended these guys to me 4 years ago and I have fished with them every year since and they are great. I would also recommend staying in Zancudo as it will add about 30-45 minutes of fishing and is a cool little town as well. Even the package deal is way cheaper than the other guys down there. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
Mike

Costa Mar Dream Catchers in Quepos has been great for the wife and I more than once. 36' older Hatt for 750.00, 28' regulator 450.00. Great crews and they work hard to get you on the fish. Couple hours south of Los Suenos and not so glitzy/expensive. Where ever you go in CR will be great fishing. A half day inshore for roosters is a must.

If you really want to get away from the world as you know it - go to Zancudo - Zancudo Lodge (used to be Roy's) is great - very nice facilities and some creature comforts - and I have met the guys referenced in the other notes but didn't fish with them - might do so next time. This is definitely not Los Suenos but you really get to see the "real" Costa Rica.

It's been several years since I've been to Zijuatenejo but, while we only caught tuna. The dock was loaded up with marlin that were kept rather t;han released. That may have changed but until I hear differently, I'll never fish there again. Costa Rico rocks and if we wind up getting taxed into oblivion, it might be agreat place to set up headquarters. I've only fished out of Los Suenos and it is above my pay grade. Next time down there, I'll try Zancudo
