Just wondering if anyone was knowledgable about commercial black drum fishing. I have seen lines out that had wooden dowel rods on them for bait and was just wondering if they soaked them in any type of attractant or just put the dowels on by theirselves?

A TP&W net survey guy told me that many of the commercial fisherman spray the pieces of dowel rod with WD-40. Apparently it acts as some kind of attractant.

Fish oil - WD 40

I have heard several times over the years that WD-40's main ingredient is fish oil. After reading THIS I'm not sure why it would be used as an attractant.

In corpus most of the comm guys soak the wood or cork in fishy or shrimp water - grind up some mullet or pound some shrimp add water and soak the wood/cork in the mixture and bait up the hooks. Jason Slocum

the dowels look as if they are small crabs swimming in the water and the oil keeps it from getting water logged between seasons and helps keep it floating.

Guy used to live down the street from me in Crystal Beach fished for Drum. He used just the 1/2 inch dowel rod cut and drilled. It was all he needed.

Using dowels takes advantage of the fact the black drum are stupider than hardheads.

I had the privilege of going out on the water with old Bobby's old neighbor. That guy caught lots of fish on 50 cents worth of dowel rods. I think that is when I started hating fishing.
