I am new to 2coolfishing... But not to offshore fishing. We now have the boat at gulf coast marina in surfside and are lovin it. Well me and my dad tried tuna fishing for the first time saturday night. We went out to east cerveza in our 28 ft grady white cc. Flat calm seas on sat. We caught a few blackfin on diamond jigs, and we think we hooked up to a big grouper with a snapper slapper cause he dove deep and straight into the rig, and we battled him for over an hour when he made another run into the rig and cut the line. Then i was jiggin a knife jig when all the sudden i found myself with no line on my reel...i dont know what the hell it was, but that thing stripped all 400 yds of 80# braid w/full drag off in about 30 seconds. After that we hooked up to several mor fish, but the hook pulled every time, idk what was goin wrong. Well like i said, i am new to this site, so any input or any tips would be appreciated... By the way, do yall tgink we would need more than our 205 gal of fuel, cruising at 35mph with a fuel burn of 1.5 gal.to get to boomvang and back safely?.-fourSEAsons

I bet you had a big Amberjack spool you like that, but you never know. Could have been a big shark or even Yellowfin. Same happened to me in August there, I was jigging and couldnt stop whatever was spooling me.

You gonna cut it close on your fuel. What you gave there is 307. Boomvang and back is 270-280 miles round trip. Thats what Ive been doing, with the drifts included. We did 320 this past trip fishing a few other spots. You have to save yourself some leeway in case. If your getting 1.5mpg, I would calculate your trip by 1.3mpg just to be safe, thats what we do at least

thats what i was thinking it was, either a big AJ or a YFT, it happened so fast that i could not tell. but it sure was fun.

ya we were thinking that we would be pushing it on the BV situation... so i think sometime in the near future we are gonna invest in a 50-80 gal. fuel bladder.

Hooks Opened

On the jiggs that you use check the ring that holds the hook on to the Jigg. We have replaced most of the ones we use because they are using soft rings to hold the hooks. You can also put on another hook at the top of the Jigg is you want... Sounds like you had a great time, Do Make Sure You Allow for Extra Fuel... Thanks for sharing
