CenterPoint Energy prepares for Hurricane Ike, issues important electric & natural gas safety tips

Customers need to be prepared to be without power for at least two weeks

HOUSTON - September 10, 2008 - CenterPoint Energy urges customers to have their own emergency plan ready to implement should Hurricane Ike strike, particularly if customers depend on electricity for life-sustaining equipment. Customers need to be prepared to be without power for two weeks or possibly longer depending on the severity of the storm.

In addition to the company's own field personnel, the company has linemen and tree trimmers from around the country ready to assess damage, clear trees and begin power restoration once the storm passes.

CenterPoint Energy is a member of a mutual assistance program with other utility companies that can provide help in an emergency.

In addition to having employees prepared, CenterPoint Energy has sufficient fuel and supplies in inventory to begin restoration efforts.

The company has also made arrangements with its vendors and distributors for its post-storm needs.

In the first few days after a hurricane or major storm, CenterPoint Energy will assess the damage and then will work around the clock until everyone's power is restored. The company's first priority in restoring service is to key facilities vital to safety, health and welfare, such as hospitals, water treatment plants and public service facilities.

Then, it repairs those major lines and circuits that will restore power to the greatest number of customers in the shortest amount of time.

While natural gas lines are buried underground and are not normally affected by strong winds, high water or other abnormal weather conditions, the company is fully prepared to respond to any emergency situation that might arise due to Hurricane Ike.

Pre-storm safety tips:

Electric

* Unplug sensitive electrical appliances, such as your computer

* Turn off circuit breakers

Natural gas

* Do not turn off your natural gas at the meter. The gas meter

should

be left on to maintain proper pressure in the gas piping within the house and to prevent water from entering the lines should flooding occur.

* If you wish to discontinue gas service, turn the gas off at each

appliance. Later, to restore gas service to an appliance, it is only necessary to follow the written instructions located on the appliance for relighting. If you are unable to locate instructions, call a qualified plumber.

THE WORKERS

Just got back from helping the people in the Eunice and New Iberia areas get their lights back on we arrived last Wednesday Sept 3rd about 2 pm and worked until dark picking up wire, bracing broke poles with one eye on the look out for snakes. The second day we started working 05:30 to 21:30 (16hrs shifts) repeating the same tasks as the day before but in more difficult conditions (swamps and heavily wooded areas) not all our work was in backyards and on the streets.I talked with the local people and they said the winds reached 80 mph with some higher gusts. These people had been without lights since Monday Sep 1st morning and were very grateful that we had arrived to get the lights back burning,,not one customer anything negative to say to us only praises and many thanks even though some got their lights back on yesterday Sept 9th. All I asked to who ever is reading this is to a 2-3 week plan in place on how to survive day to day without power because if this storm hits close to our service area you will be in the dark for more than a few days, we will have Lineman from around the state of Texas and other parts of the US coming to your aid. MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL PLEASE BE PATIENT WITH THE WORKERS THAT ARE THERE TO HELP YOU there is no need in getting upset and hacked off about it taking so long to get the power back on because alot of the workers out getting your lights back don't have electricity either, they may even be sleeping in "tent citys set up by CNP" or in their trucks..And I know the #1 Question is "when do you think the lights will be back on" but please when you see a crew in your area please dont ask the workers that question because if we have to stop and talk to every customer we will never be able to get your power back to you.Nothing personal,,,,Good luck to all ..and it may not be a bad idea to get a generator

What really makes me mad is that I have been calling Centerpoint,Reliant and City of Houston to get the limbs trimmed off my powerlines for several months now.Not one person has contacted me or even attempted to clear the power line right of way.I remember when there were people always clearing the lines. This will only compound the power outage problems.I would try to clear the line myself but I don't think it is safe.
