Boat riding down the intercoastal yesterday, see a huge flock of seagull hovering close to the water but not diving. Ease over close and see a snake swimming across the channel. I hate snakes so I don't get too close but I do watch for a while. It had the diamond markings like a rattlesnake (only seen in pics...did I mention I hate snakes). This thing was fat also. Probably around 5' long. Not too sure, I didn't get that close. Did I mention I hate snakes?

Yep they do. A couple of years back I was wadding the south shoreline of East Matty and waded up (within 10 yrds) on a Rattlesnake. He was coiled up with his head and tail up just floating on top. I made a mad dash back to the boat and fire it up then hit the snake at approx 40 mph. I'm sure the hull moved him out of the way of the prop but I wasn't about to turn around to find out..........

I'm withya, I HATE SNAKES!!!!!!!

D4mn right they can swim!!!! I tore up one of my Falcon rods at the back of the boat beating a 5 footer as he came onto the deck next to the motor!
I hate snakes as much as you do, and I would have tore up everything I could get my hands on to kill that thing!
Did I mention I hate snakes as much as you?

**** I'd hate to be a poor ol rat eating rattlesnake in this part of the country!

They just trying to make a living boys. Unless they're around the house or something, give them some slack. Funny how much stuff people will tear up, hurt themselves, etc., and sometimes get snake bit trying to snuff something they should have just walked around to begin with.

Now mocassins, their a little different. Pugnacious rascals. You can gun all them you want.

What were you doing "boat riding" in the ICW? Did you have some dead shrimp in the boat too?

This statement seems to imply that there are snakes that CAN smim submerged!!! (I hate snakes too) Is that true???
some can, but not many. there are a few salt water snakes around texas, but they are uncommon, and it is very unlikely that you would ever come in contact with one while wading.

even if you did, it is even more unlikely that he would bother you.

snakes really don't want to have anything to do with people anymore than most people want to have anything to do with them. just leave 'em alone, and snakes are happy to just do their snake thing -- which is finding a meal and reproducing now and then. they're alot like us, when you think about it.

Heck, I wasn't so concerned about them swimming as much as when I found out the boogers can climb trees. I've only been hunting in Texas for a little over 5 years. I've always opted to hunt out of tree stand rather than a ground blind to get away from the snakes. So one day while on a hunting message board I see a picture of a ratter in a tree stand. I show it to my buddy who introduced me to hunting, and I said, "I thought you said rattler's can't climb." He said he new they could climb, but if he told me that, he would never have gotten me to go hunting! Yikes. I hate snakes!
