according the bouy 42020 the waves have been 4-6 the past 12 hours or so. I think the boat could handle it but I dont think you would want to handle that all day, or even for a little while. 3-4' on short intervals means like 15knots or less to go out and bumpy at that.

since you just got the boat and you are probably not too familiar with her, you should wait for better sea conditions to get used to how the boat handles and build up to higher seas as you get more comfortable.

Can your boat take it? Sure, as long it's in good shape. The real question is: Are you going to be comfortable in those seas? I'd say 3 -4's in a 22' boat is pushing uncomfortable, but then again that's just me.

Brad
I agree with Bpitcher.....its how bad do you want to fish and personal preference on what is comfortable. Check the spread of the waves. The more time inbetween the more comfortable you will be out there...if they are very short I would wait.

I'll run offshore a couple times a year in a 21' 6" seaswirl. "Comfortable" to me is 2' or less and a wave period of 3 times the wave height.

4' with a 5 second interval and 15 knot wind (how tomorrow will probably be) will be VERY uncomfortable in a 22' boat.

Like previously mentioned, I would wait for a better day.

resist the urge of trying the boat out in conditions like this. I WILL NOT plan a trip if I expect anything near this. If you are caught in it that is one thing, the boat would be fine, but, you on the other hand will have a strange look on your face when you get back to shore. Good weather is to be had soon, wait it out and enjoy the good days. Also, one of the guide that one of my friends use is take the forcasted seas and add them together..... 3-4 is really 3+4=7'. I do not believe it most of the time but I have seen it turn out like that.

BRO,WAIT! i was so pumped about 3 weeks ago to go out in my 17 footer and it was the WORST trip i ever made. it was 4 to 6 ft. i knew at the end of the jetties that i should turn around, but no! i'm too hard headed!! got about 15 miles and tied up to a rig. that in itself was a job. caught a few fish. started to feel sick, so told the kid and wife we needed too head in. the seas were building. about a mile from the rig is when it got fun. wave over the bow and out come the life jackets.tried too call my buddy, but no cell service. moved along at maybe 2 mph. thats right,2 mph! got to about 9 miles from shore when my cell picked up service, so i got ahold of my buddy and he told me just chill and take it slow. called another buddy that has too many years on the water and he calmed me down. it took me 2 1/2 hours too get to the tip of the jetties. that was the worst time i ever had fishing or doing anything in my life. i was a little scared myself, but i was more scared for my family!! felt like i put their life on the line! that feeling sucks, and if something would have happen, i would really feel like ****! it will never happen again, unless a storm pops up on me??? just stay home and check out the boat a little more and when you get to go out, your trip will be more enjoyable!!! hope this helps!

Kiss of death.New boat.
As I lived in Kemah I would see new boat owners EVERYTIME load up all their friends and head out in a new boat they hadn't tested max yet.
Lucky if all you do is forget to put the plug in. Electrics, fuel, carbs anything you havent checked yet will quirk out and leave you looking like a idiot in front of too many friends.
I bought a used boat years ago. Put my 6 hp kicker and went to clear lake. Sure enough ten min into the lake overheat alert fires up. No prob. I knew I was in the lake, I knew the kicker worked , nobody in the boat but me , called the dealer I bought the boat from and went over to their dock. Never had to leave the boat. They took me back to the truck and I picked it up later. I dont want a gold star but I knew I was in Clear Lake and if worse somebody would tow me to the ramp 1/2 mile . I was just staying in the lake til I had confidence in the motor. I would never take my wife offshore in anything small enough to launch at a ramp. Unless it was a Fountain or Donzi 2 x the length of my truck.

It takes a big person to admit he did something wrong. It takes a bigger person to tell everyone in a forum like this. THANK YOU. Your story could save someone, someday.

I'm not the most experienced boater by far. And more of a hunter than fisherman. But one thing sticks in my mind that I'll never forget. And I don't say this to scare you. I was something about 12 years old and we were in North California for vacation trying to catch silver salmon. We had waited 3 days on weather. Each morning we'd meet the captain at the diner. Each morning he said no way. Weather was not good. I have no clue of how bad. But the 3rd morning was our last chance there so we had to leave without fishing. As we ate breakfast a brand new boat called for a clearance and never made it out of the jetties right in front of us. Had to try the boat and something happened. I don't recall what it was but the boat went down right there and the new owner drowned right there before the CG could get there.

I never needed to go that bad since. I will run to the jetties and take a peek if its a maybe maybe not day. I will not go if its worse than 2-3 feet max, prefering less. In a 2100 Hydrasport.
