can anybody tell me how to get the spool off? I could swear that on the previous 250s I've had I was able to remove the spool once i got the side plate off, but I can't on the one I have now........I don't want to use alot of force for fear of warping the spool or breaking the shaft........any suggestions? Also, should the drag washers be lubed at all or just cleaned to remove any debris/buildup? Thanks for your input.

It should just pull right off.. I have a 150 and a 250 and that's how they are.. Just undo the two side plate bolts, pull the plate off and then pull the spool out..

Ain't much more to it than that! Sounds like yours might be slightly seized to the bearing.

Jeff, Make Sure The "Push Button" Hasn't Been Pressed....

Put the side-plate back on and turn the handle and listen for the "click." Then take off the side plate again and the spool should pull right out. If that doesn't work, and if you haven't already done so, strip the line off and spray the heck out of the area you think is stuck with anything....WD-40, etc. It could be dirt and corrosion holding it stuck. It is a standard Calcutta 250, isn't it? CF?

You might have something stuck in between the spool and the frame? You should be able to put pressure on the inside of the spool/frame area and push it out. Don't know what else to say after that.

On the drag, take it apart and use a flat-head screwdriver to scrape the dark grease off, this will also rough up the washer A LITTLE, don't overdo it. Reapply Shimano Drag Grease and it should be smooth again. If the washer is really worn out, go to Academy and buy a maint. kit for the 250, it'll have a new washer, grease, bearings, a new set of brakes, and some lube oil. I think the last one I purchased was about $15.
