OK Bigwater, how about this!

Is this the answer you're looking for?
A "Laker" is a type of ship that trades only in the Great Lakes of North America. They usually carry grain and ore cargoes.

Ding Ding Ding!!! Aunt Joyce nails Bigwater Quiz #1. Thats exactly what it is and where they operate. Thats also what they carry as cargo. The St. Lawrence river ties into this chain of lakes by a man made water way and has many locks and whatknot to get them around watewr falls and such as Niagra. The lakers are too large to operate outside of the great lakes so they stay in the lakes giving them the name Laker.
That was awful fast Aunt Joyce! You're a true Winner!

Thanks Bigwater!

I just researched your question. Got the answer right away. Then hunted for a photo. Found one then added the text to the bottom of the photo that described the ship.
It was fun! I was concerned though that the white type was not that readable (I could have chosen black) but it seemed to work better with the photo.
Do it again Bigwater!
