Have a semi steep ditch, flat front yard but very rough back 1/2 acre to mow. Thoughts /experience ?

Back half acre seems to have a lot of holes and crawfish mounds. Thinking a larger front tire size would help. Also, what about getting stuck in the mud? My mom has zero turns and who ever is mowing seems to always manage to get them stuck when it is wet... Mower the place with a snapper riding mower the first time, man it was hard to steer, those holes /mounds were tough to deal with.

When your about to get stuck on a zero turn, the mud will always pull you in, once you feel the mower turning, aise the deck and accelerate in that direction until your either free of buried. Most times you'll pull free to solid ground, otherwise your sol!

I've had a SCAG 48" Tiger Cub commercial mower since 2003. It's been great I've probably spent about $200 a year overall with maintenance and up keep and I mow 5-1/2 acres that is rough with a lot of trees. I'm very hard on my equipment lol. I've used it several summers to mow for extra money too. Whatever you get I highly recommend a Kawasaki engine.

Not true. Inclines, ditches, undulating "moundy" ground, get one with a floating deck you control by foot. I've mowed some crazy terrain from a friends insanely crazy few acre lot on Lake Buchanen to a 12 acre community park (seriously sloped down to the COE water) on Canyon I used to live in years back. Everything in between with rocks, cedar stumps, whatever. I had a 60" X Mark with a 27 hp Kawasaki and it was a beast. It had a foot controlled floating deck with 8" variance and after I got used to feathering it it'd mow anything on any kind of slope. Have a 54" JD now for my few acres and it's a turd compared to that X Mark.

IMO zero turns will always get stuck easier, especially in steep ditches. I would suggest looking at a four wheel steer mower like the John Deere x700 series, some of which are also four wheel drive. Two years ago I bought a x304 which is all wheel steer but not 4WD. There is also the X500 series. some of them have a locking differential which may be enough to handle the rough terrain.

My all wheel steer mower doesn't quite have the same turning radius as a zero turn but it's pretty tight and I like having a regular steering wheel.

There are also some other 4wd mowers out there (I think simplicity makes one). Not sure what your price range is as some of these mowers can get close to $10K (or more) but those zero turns are also pretty close.

I had a Gravely and sold it and bought a Kubota (gas). That Kubota has a suction system in the cutter that really picks up the grass and dust. You need a dust mask when you use it. I am thinking about selling it and buying another Gravely.

This is where we bought our 60" Exmark LazerZ about 7-8 years ago. It's a mowing beast on our rough 4 acres. I added a bracket and ball on the rear frame to tow my 10' trailer and spray tank cart around. Works like a champ.
They also sell Scag so you can compare them side-by-side. We had garden/yard tractors for years and wouldn't go back to one of those for anything. Last one was a Kubota 12hp diesel with 48" deck. This rough ground we have was the devil on the mower deck and keeping it level.

I have an industrial Dixie chopper and I mow my ditch and rough 10 acre yard with it. It has a spring loaded seat that you adjust for your weight and a spring loaded front end that helps out a lot. Also will run 16mph if grass is short and no too rough.

John Deere 997

72" Deck with a diesel motor
Only thing we did different was changed out the back tires.
Got rid of the turf savers and went with an aggressive tread,
really keeps the getting stuck to a minimum.
Problem with Zero's are that they are very rear heavy, so when the drive tires are stuck.... Your stuck!
HF 12v winch seems to take care of that!
