What town do you live in? There are several good fly fishing clubs around the state and one may be within driving distance.

On the left side of this website page is a list of some of the local clubs around the state. Scan through it. Links to state flyfishing clubs.

The only caveat I have about going to a fly shop is they are in the business to make money. Use them only to find local clubs or fisherman who can teach you the basics.

WELCOME to the wonderful fun world of fly fishing.

Depending on your budget....you can buy a TFO lefty kreh pro II rod that is great for the money but not made in the US and ether a lamson Konic or something close it based on what you like....if you have money and want American made stuff then look At Colton's website...once there click on the "our mission" button then read everything on that page...very nice guy who runs it..if you have any questions email him..he will help you in your decision

Please Please PLEASE,do whatever you can to take a lesson before buying a rod. Some shops used to do a kind of informal, free, group casting lesson on a weekend morning. And remember, if you ever want to visit that shop again, please buy whatever you end up wanting from that shop. You will be treated much better in there upon future visits. Most shops will also invariably throw in some stuff now and again (usually flies or leaders or thread if you end up fly-tying as well...small stuff but hey) during future visits. As was mentioned, if you could find a "club" in your area, it would serve you well. Not sure if there is one real close to you or not, sorry. Texas Fly Fishers is in Houston, and could become a great resource for you if you can travel there.
If you can't find a casting instructor close to you, pm me and we'll try to work something out.
