When you get down to it, ask for R-values of the roof/ceiling and wall assemblies. Barndominiums are great for a lot of reasons, but weatherability and energy efficiency aren't necessarily two of them. It depends on the builder and how good their advice and direction is and whether or not you scrimp on the wrong things.

A childhood friend and her husband had me do a floor plan and elevations for one about 8 years ago as a retirement home. They handed what I did for them to the builder and then started all of the negotiations on what to use where. Overall, they love it, but ended up redoing the insulation in the barn portion from what I told them not to do (plastic backed roll goods) to a spray-foam. Made the initial decision based on cost and regretted it.

 

Also, ask what wind load the building is designed for.

 

Not sure if they are in your area but look up Texas Best Construction. I watch their YouTube videos of builds and they look awesome. He also gives a lot of tips on how to properly build one for energy efficiency.

 

I've watched a few of their videos as well and learned some things, unfortunately they don't come this far south.

 

I have been looking at the Barndo as a lower-maintenance option as our 'forever/retirement' home. I don't know how much truth there will be in that statement, but it sounds good on paper.

 

I double insulated the building where the living quarters is being built.

 

Make sure to use a concealed fastener panel for the roof. Ie standing seam. I just finished mine and love it. Very energy efficient with the spray foam insulation.
