NT Govt backs fisherman beer privileges

Posted 7 hours 49 minutes ago

The Northern Territory Government is springing to action to prevent fishermen being stopped from having a beer on rivers adjoining Aboriginal land.

Territory Licensing Minister Chris Burns has received advice that the Federal Government's planned alcohol bans will also affect rivers, and he is not happy.

"We want to stand up for the rights of Territorians, particularly when it comes to fishing," he said.

Dr Burns and Chief Minister Clare Martin have faxed a letter to the Prime Minister on the issue.

"What I've said all along, in any of the measures the Federal Government wants to take, they've got to be practical and workable and they've got to target the people causing the problems," Ms Martin said.

Ms Martin says the last thing the Territory needs is for people to be penalised if they want to drink a beer while catching a fish.
