Headed down that way for the weekend. I have a room booked at the Neptune (Thanks Tombo).

I am taking the girlfriend down this weekend and I want to try and put her on a few fish. I sure would hate to get skunked. Any recommendations for places to fish while I am there?

I am dragging the boat down there this weekend to do a little exploring for a trip that is soon to come, so boundaries are almost non existent.

I picked up a Hot Spots map of the area and see tons of places that sure look "fishy". I don't really know where to start...

Any good restaurants I should check out? Anything else that I should make an effort to see?

Local restaraunts would be Hamptons Landing and Shempy's for burgers, try the bread pudding at Shempy's, their specialty. Fins in Port Aransas is always good. We like La Playa in Port A, Tuna fritas for appetizer, crab enchiladas or any of the specials they have for main course, house margarita with a shot of Grand Marinier on top, and don't forget to split a Flan for dessert. Just a shot in the dark. Try fishing all of the flats close to the jetties, for Redfish, they are schooling up.

Redfish are all over the flats. Cover lots of water drifting, poling, look for bait. Ransom/Daggar flats would be my first stop. Brown and Root flat #2, then across the ship channel to East flats/Shamrock.
Day 2 go north to Estes/California hole. May want to get tight against shore at Traylor and look for reds. Then cross bay to Mud Island and superflat. Finish up along Quarrentine shore with an outgoing tide for trout.

Reasonable and good seafood can be found in Ingleside at Blackbeard's, Atmosphere places are in Port A. Good luck.

Places to eat....and advice

Whatever you do don't go to Fins.... tourist trap hell.... Music on the "back porch" is always a great way to end a day after a meal. There are tons of good places in Port A but get into town past Fins..

Los Comales in Rock Port rocks.

Call Slow Ride Guide service for updates on the fishing. Stop by and meet them if you get the chance. Great couple.

Also Neptune is not bad but the Microtel Close to the Bridge is nicer room for same price and includes Full breakfast.

Stay out of Light House with the boat.

Best advice is to not fish blind. Move around alot and look for pods of reds. If you are on the flats and you don't see fish keep moving till you do. You will definately increase your success and keep the girly happy.

And whatever you do when you get home...rmember the fishing sucked...;-)

I think the Crab N is kind of "atmospheric." All those snowy white table cloths make quite an impression. The fried shrimp is $17.00, and the shrimp with a heavy cream-crab sauce is $22.00. They will cook what you catch for $10.00. There's a new Bar-B-Que place out on the highway towards Cove Harbor that isn't bad, I want to say the name is Novasad Smokehouse, or something like that. $10.00 for a sliced beef sandwich, chips and tea, but it's pretty good.

Mac's in Aransas Pass for great BBQ. A hole in the wall but great eats and sides. $5 - $9.
Butter Churn Buffet for alot of pretty good home style cooking. The atmoshere is suited for your grandparents but a good place to go if you are just plain hungry. I've been in California since April but it's probably still $10.50+/- for dinner, tax and drinks included. I'll be back mid November. The first place I always go to is Mac's. $3.75 sliced brisket sandwich. $6.99 full dinners. If your girlfriend has to have ambiance, leave her home. Hole in wall restaurants usually = good food. Atmosphere usually equals an empty wallet and a trip to Macdonalds afterwards cause you're still hungry.

OOps! Make that Whataburger, afterwards. This is south Texas. Who eats at MacDonalds???? Good luck with your fishing. Around the jetties when water conditions allow it.
