Took a little break from grinding it out in Baffin and headed for the clear waters around Aransas Pass for an exciting adventure with clients Kevin and Walker Kidd.
Met up with Kevin and Walker the night before to work out all the details and point out a few places of interest in Rockport and Aransas Pass. Walker is on break between semesters at University of Oregon and his Dad, Kevin let me know that this was to be a "catching" trip for Walker to stock up on some fresh fish to go back to Oregon with him..........No Pressure LOL.
I was confident that we could do well as I had many reports about good catches of trout and reds (mostly reds) around Redfish Bay, South Bay and Estes Flats. The plan was to search until we found what we were looking for, schools of hungry aggressive reds and or trout.
Our first stop was a grassy flat pock marked with numerous deep sandy potholes. I rigged everyone up with topwaters and gave a quick lesson while standing at the back of the boat. On my first cast, I instructed them to let the lure settle for a few seconds..... like this..... before beginning to work it with a slow, steady cadence..... like this..... and wait til you feel the weight of the fish..... LIKE THIS!! as I set the hook and handed off the rod. Kevin quickly landed the smallish trout and we all had a good laugh. I didn't mention to them that I always consider it bad luck to catch a fish on the first cast. I just kept my fingers crossed that the fish would continue to be cooperative.
Well, the trout didn't want to cooperate with us but the redfish were more than willing.
Walker soon hooked up on his first ever keeper redfish on a red/white Super Spook Jr. and with just a little coaching fought the 23"er like a pro. I helped him string his first fish and snapped a quick pic. WTG Walker!
