My soon to be wife and I are going to San Pedro,Belize for our honeymoon (late October) and would like to take an inshore flats light tackle/ fly fishing trip for bones, poons and permits and whatever else. Any recommendations would be extremely helpful as I know I can trust the 2cool crew to give me some answers.

Thanks,
Clint

We went there for our honeymoon before it was a real popular spot... Before that tv show temptation island etc.

I was a little disappointed in the fishing gear provided by the guide and not the fish. My wife and I went on a tarpon trip (stayed at Ramones village btw). The guide did not have the right kind of hooks for tarpon so we just jumped HUGE tarpon the whole time and never got one in. We anchored up at a pass between the barrier reef and the ocean. You could literally see these 200+ lb tarpon swimming under the boat and making their way out the pass but could NOT stick one for the life of us.

We will be back one of these days and bring our own gear for sure. Not sure about the flats fishing though.

Better Belize It!

Congrats on your up coming marriage! My wife and I honeymooned on Ambergris in January 2012- good choice. El Pescador is your best bet for quality fly guides since they target the "big three" almost exclusively. We took a trip with them and the guide (can't recall his name - Gasper maybe) worked hard to put us on fish and we caught a ton of 15"-17" bone fish, but only one shot at a permit and zero tarpon. El Pescador's fly and spinning gear was in fair to good condition, but I brought my own stuff and was glad I did. The second trip, we hired a local independent guide and trolled the inside of the reef and caught a lot of Snapper, Cuddas and other reef fish. My wife really enjoyed this action and the variety species, not to mention the size of the fish were way bigger than bone fish so the fights were way more fun. After fishing the morning we snorkeled for conch and the guide beached the boat and cooked us a shore lunch of snapper, conch fritters and mango paired with several Belekins. Frankly I enjoyed the reef trip more than the El Pescador trip, catching little bones gets old after a while. Tip #1 - if you take an independent guide, be sure you bring plenty of terminal tackle, i.e. swivels, light leader wire, hooks and some big rattletraps, cudda tubes, spoons and big topwaters from the States. You will get broke off on the reef and cut off by Cuddas often- so don't take any of your favorite/expensive lures. Tackle is hard to come by down there and when the guide runs out of his stuff, you're screwed - also, you can leave the stuff with the guide as part of his tip. Tip #2 - take your own rod(s) - the guides' gear will be pretty beat up. I had 2 Med Hvy travel spinning rods with 4000 class reels and 50# braid, perfect for anything inside the reef. Lastly, there are several older posts on this site about Belize, so use your search function or send me PM for more info.

Have a great honeymoon!

:texasflag You CANNOT go wrong at El Pescador. We leave Monday for our third stay there. We've been multiple times and met couples, young, on their honeymoon. These couples had a ball. It is a GREAT place and they will put you on the fish and is a super family atmosphere!!!!! Pay a bit extra and get a Villa, worth it. Chris and Steve run a 1st Class operation, hands down you will enjoy it!

I went with a group of guys to fish, but party as well. We didn't think that El Pescador would put up with us so we stayed down the road and hired our own guide. He was recommended by Flatscast on here, Roberto Bradley. I want to say he has 6 brothers and all of them are guides. He was very patient, good and knowledgeable. I am by no means a fly fisherman and he put us on shots of smaller schoolies all day long. Between 2 of us we caught maybe 20 in a half day. We hired his son the next day to day us snorkeling in Ho Chi whatever and to Caye Caukler, he was a blast as well.

San Pedro

Clint,

When are you going to be in San Pedro? Future wife and I are also Honeymooning there the week of October 20-27, north end of town in home we got through VRBO. I would definitely be down to split a trip with you if that is feasible. I've flyfished for rainbow trout before, but prefer spinning/casting tackle since my woman will be along.

I would love to get into some juvenile tarpon as well...

Thanks,

David

I got married in Ambergris Caye many moons ago. My experience is that there were fishing guides all over the island. Where ever you are staying will be able to recommend several. We booked one day with a guy before went, but, fished several other days with guides recommended locally.

I wouldn't stress about it. Finding one should not be a problem. And, we got a better deal hiring the guys when we got there.

The best guides for inshore fly fishing are the Bradley Brothers. Roberto and George Bradley have been are natives and have been guiding for +40 yrs there. I've done this many times there, one of my friends built Victoria House, which is the place where most everyone wants to stay. They can also handle the reef fishing, if that is what your bride prefers.
