i have a bunch of nickels and quarters in my pocket. i have three more nickels than i have quarters, and the total amount of money equals $4.65.

how many coins of each do i have?

the first 2cooler with the correct answer gets a brand new, sparkling, 2010 ... greenie.

you must show your work. no work, no greenie. have fun.

solve for Z and Y

Z = (Y-3)

(.25 x Z )+( .10 x Y )= 4.65

(x*.25) + .05(x+3)=4.65
.25x + .05x + .15 = 4.65
.3x + .15 = 4.65
.3x = 4.50
x = 15
x + 3 = 18

15 quarters
18 nickels
we have a winner. good job, algebra dude.

chase, you get a greenie for effort. you had it, but didn't show your work correctly.

forgot to show the work.......

.25x + .05(x+3)= 4.65
.25x + .05x + .15= 4.65
.3x + .15 = 4.65
.3x = 4.50
x = 4.50/.3
x = 15
15 quarters & 18 nickels

I did some testing today that involved bending and torsional moments on flange connections for a pressure vessle required by ANSI B109.3 section 2.4 and ANSI B109.2 section 2.13 for strength of natural gas meter connections.

I made the Engineer do the math for me. :D
