Well, I start a new job tomorrow, in a new (kind of) city, with a new truck, etc. Basically a whole new life, with the exception of Katie and Paige (and I think I'll keep them ;) ). I've decided to give up drinking beer like a fish to go along with it. I actually went out and ran yesterday for the first time in about 6 years. My body hates me today, but I feel good about it. Beer ain't making me any skinnier, or winning me any new friends, so it's gonna go. My "power drinker" days are over. ;) Now I just have to figure out how to limit myself to 1 or 2 in a night and not want more. Any suggestions from anyone who has severely cut back their intake??

LOL....getting older will take of that by itself, shaddy. About 7 years ago I got hooked on playing baseball again on an over 40 rec league out here in Ca. I was 40 at the time and could drink my weight in beer. Working to stay in shape eventually took over and I now have no desire to drink like a fish anymore....but I still knock down a couple with the guys once in a while. So I guess what I am saying is, stick with getting back in shape and maybe find a league there in the Houston area and play some ball and the power drinking thing should take care of itself.

That's actually why I've decided to get back in shape. I'd like to find a men's league baseball program to play in. Anyone know of one? One that's not a beer league...LOL!

Bro, we're about the same age and Im right there with you. Both spent our early 20's in an above average physical lifestyle(you played ball, me Marines) and now were in our 30's, settling down and still think we can hammer a case like we did back then. Well Im not getting any taller either and have the same problem. Im with ya all the way and if you figure it out please let me know. My mind and heart still wanna run and gun like I did back then but the body is fighting it now. lol Im trying right there with ya bro.

Have you tried running lately, Zac? My body kept asking me who I was running from and why?? :D It wasn't pretty and I'm walking like Frankenstein today. And it was only 8 years ago that I ran 5 miles a day! :D Man, I'm getting old! ;)

yep, bad thing is I really do love to run. Just got the wrong body for it. lol 10 years ago I could stay out all night and be in formation for a 10 mile run at 0530 and not even blink. Now I run 3 miles and smell like Ben Gay for 3 days. :D My job doesnt help, it is very sedentery and its 12's. So not only do I sit on my tail all day when I get home im too tired to do anything. Now that school is out and softball is over Im hoping to get going again. Ive got some fishing IOU's with the kiddos that should keep me busy for a while but at least I wont be sitting at some ballpark all week like I have for the last 4 months.

Yep, I used to love running, too. Hopefully I can get back to that mentality again, 'cuz it sure was easy to stay in shape when you didn't mind the exercise! ;)

You are on the right track. Exercise and listen to you aching bones and muscles telling you alchohol is not helping. I usually try to drink enough to where I don't hear what my body is telling me (LOL) but I am thinking about cutting back myself and getting more active. Keep us posted and inspired.

Well, it's not really temptation that gets me. I don't drink all that often. Maybe once every couple weeks or so. But once I get moer than a couple in me, I find it very difficult to stop. That's what I need to get away from...the mentality that I always need more.

Shaddy, about 15 years ago, I came to the same place that you are now. I cut back to one beer per month, period. Three workouts a week. Now at first, it was one Foster's oil can hehe. After a few months of that, it was easy. I have even gone several months without one without a care. It allows me to drink a beer with buds when doing something that 'requires' a beer like hanging around the smoker or after a good day fishing or around the campfire or fish fryer/crawfish boiler. Start the workout slow and build it up. Your body won't allow you to get back to where you were in your 20's so don't set that as a goal. My goal is to just stay toned and try to slow down the inevitable effects of gravity and aging. Never felt better. Stronger, yes. Better, no.

Hang in there. Those girls deserve it.

yep, it's a mind thing, just put it down. I have been without wanting beer for many years. I had my only desire for a beer back around St. Paddy's day.
Takes time but gets easy.
My body turns 40 on the 7th, however my mind still thinks it's 20 years old.

ShadMan,

I'm going to be a whopping 30 years old in about 4 months. Its amazing how much the body changes in just a few short years. The hangovers hurt way too much now and they make over-indulging too much almost not worth it. I am a beer drinker and will never stop enjoying beer, I simply like it too much. I'm with you, once I get a couple in me the urge to continue drinking is sometimes very strong though. With that being said, family life and kids and jobs and etc.... has put most of my wild days clearly in the past. Now I enjoy just having a few beers on my days off around the pit while the kids swim/play in the backyard. Sure everyone overindulges now and again, for me though it is not too hard to call it quits when I know the kids will be up at 700am and I'll have them all day. Working out makes you more self conscious when it comes to your health, eating habits, and alcohol consumption. Start out slow but work out often, within a couple weeks you will begin to enjoy it again and you will actually miss it when you have to miss a workout. Try leaving out the drinking on weeknights and leave it to only a weekend thing. Basically work hard and work out hard during the week and make the weekends for relaxing, family, friends, and a couple beers.
