My dad has an old 1989 Johnson J120TLAE 120 HP motor that he's having problems with. He has done a ring job on all 4 cylinders and cleaned them out and the motor runs fine with ear muffs but when he gets it in the water and puts a load on it it bogs down and won't throttle up to full speed and will barely just push the boat.

This boat has been sitting up for a couple of years and might have had some old gas but he's put in 10 gallons of new gas but didn't drain the tank before adding it. The carbs are good and clean, he cleaned the jets (?) out so we don't think it's a carb issue. It pushs water out of the pee hole fine.

Anybody have any ideas?

compression test the cyls asap and look at the plugs while they are out

ck coils, plugs etc for spark

if it's not that, then poss. fouled high sp jet in carb(s)
