NOW LET ME GET THIS STRAIGHT! THE GOVERNMENT AND THE ENVIROMENTALIST INSIST THAT WE USE ETHANOL TO HELP REDUCE EMISSIONS. adding ethanol to gas will lower the mpg that your vehicle will get. so hypothetically if you get 20 mpg now my you will only get say 16 mpg. so now you have to buy more volume of fuel to get the same distance. where you would buy say 16 gallons of fuel to get a certain distance now you have to buy 20 gallons of fuel to get that same distance.WHICH INTURN MEANS YOUR'E STILL USING THE SAME AMOUNT OF GAS THAT YOU ORIGINALY WOULD USE IF THEY DIDN'T ADD THE ETHANOL TO GAS IN THE FIRST PLACE. THAT REALLY ****** ME OF!

Since I moved out here where the blended gas is standard, my gas mileage actually went up 5%.
that's more than likely due to your location. with an increase in altitude, air density decreases, and, therefore, your vehicle's computer will automatically cut back on the fuel to air ratio. with this, you'll usually find a decrease in horsepower, but an increase in your mpg.

Actually...

I'm sure the next craze, we'll see an ethanol shortage!
Actually, that is a problem. Ethanol is more expensive than MTBE, produces less horsepower and the US does not have the current capacity to produce all that is needed.

Stocks for the big corporate farms and the ethanol producers have gone up quite a lot lately since they're now the only game in the country for an oxygenate additive. They do have some competition from countries like Brazil that export ethanol, but it is still a rather limited supply in today's market.

Beside if we convert more corn into fuel, what will we and all our livestock eat. Just like petroleum products are everywhere (a LOT more then just gasoline) so are corn products. Just try and go to the store and find something without corn flour, meal, starch, syrup, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for reducing our dependence on foreign oil, I just don't think corn is the answer.

hopefully just a little confusion here

Flatsrat I hope there is just a little confusion going on here. There is a news story going around about an 85% ethanol 15% petroleum product that is going to have the numbers you are talking about but this is mostly aimed at the alternative fuels vehicles. I don't think they are changing the standard formula of our current fuel to more than the 90% petroleum 10% ethanol. The E85 fuel is going to be an additional choice not requirement. At least not yet anyway...
