my 150 etec is progressively getting worse with acceleration/ stalling issue. engine has approx. 250hrs. it had the problem all last year, but was very minimal and at times non-exisitant, took it out yesterday and its way worse. of course I let it sit w/o running engine since October-- but I did treat with STA-BIL. from the looks of it, the only filter is an in-line clear plastic one.
my question for any other owners is are there any other filters on the fuel system? im thinking of replacing fuel line all the way from the tank to engine, and pretty much checking the entire fuel system to look for gunk/blockage. any suggestions?

At its age, it should have had a major service at 3 years and again at 6 years.has it had those services and has it specifically had the small "cone filter" replaced in the vapor chamber? Other items to check would be for an over cooling issue. I also think they had some throttle advance arms, that should have been replaced.

update

last nite I replaced the inline filter -- the old one didn't seem too dirty-- after I pulled old filter off I put some gas in it and gave it a few shakes and poured gas out into a white plastic cup-- what came out wasn't too dirty-a little of what looked like rust specks and a few little droplets of water.
I will post complete serial number this afternoon. IF my injectors are clogged-- what would be a good fuel treatment to run to see if I can clean them up? also, where is the little "cone filter" located?

The cone filter is located in the fuel injector return line nipple at the bottom of the VST chamber. When they get packed full of crud, it causes weird running conditions.
this may be my problem-- I just watched a youtube video on pulling that filter and cleaning it or replacing -- I will be diving into that project this afternoon! thanks Ronnie redwing! also-- what is the best fuel injector cleaner out there for use on etec? even if the cone filter is my prob I would like to run something through to clean up--IF theres anything that really works--ive ran seafoam thru a few times.

KISS

KISS: Keep it simple...

Fuel filters and SPARK PLUGS are about all you can do on that motor without a computer and the latest Evinrude diagnostic software. You can thank the libtards and EPA for that... Even the throttle position sensor requires a qualified mechanic with computer to calibrate. My old Ficht would let me do the tps but no more on the '08 ETec. If you replaced the fuel filter/water separator, go ahead and do the spark plugs and maybe wires. sparkplugs.com will save you over 50% compared to the ETec-dealers. ETecs are a high performance motor and are known to consume spark sources, tps, and occasionally fuel injectors. Ethanol fuel can be a culprit. Basically it is the most BULLET PROOF outboard on the market! All the boyz who love their 4 bangin' yammers, suzis, and hondas never owned a good ETec! I've got 2 of them; 60 and 250 HO. They both rock!

update--

pulled the "cone filter" it was about 50% blocked with a blackish/ silver gunk-- cleaned it good and put it back in. I did notice that when I changed the plastic inline filter that clamps on both in/out sides didn't seem tight-- when I started trying to loosen clamps the filter moved around pretty easily and leaked gas before I even loosened clamps at all. wondering if my fuel system coulda been suckin some air in? I put all new spark plugs in august of last year. after I changed cone filter I squeezed primer bulb until it was tight and fired it- it seemed to run smoother, but that's just hooked up to hose. I will admit I never squeeze bulb before I fire it when I launch-- never seemed to need it, but it could be a factor.

What Ronnie said.

If you have done everything you can, correctly, it's time to put her on a qualified computer in the hands of a qualified " Evinrude factory authorized mechanic" ETec's do tend to have injector coil shorts after years in service. It has nothing to do with fuel quality and everything to do with electrical load & ohms through the injector revealing a weak spot in the injector coil. The worst thing you can do for an ETec cylinder with an injector that has a shorted coil is to continue to run the motor. The affected cylinder is likely not getting any lubrication.

another update--

ok -- took it out to matty on Thursday- she got on plane in the intercoastal and ran like a scalded dawg, pushing 50 mph. when I was coming home after fishing all day with no probs, crossing the bay I got into some heavy chop- it went back to doing it, pretty bad. as soon as I got back to ICW, where it was glass smooth, she took off and the problem disappeared, right back to 50 mph. im thinking I got something that's getting jarred around in rough water and is causing the problem-- could be throttle arm?

thats it--

this is the exact video I found on youtube-- I even used a screw just like that to pull it out-- mine was pretty clogged-- brake cleaner or WD-40 in aerosol can works great to clean it out-- I just cant figure out what ive got going on when I hit heavy chop/waves. it definitely ran better than before.
IDK, I may have to just take it in to a certified mech (although I hate to - I usually do most of this stuff myself)
