I have a 2005 Merc 250 EFI than I have having the following issue.

Cold start: all is good. Prime the bulb, turn the key, push in for ignition choke (I have now been schooled that my EFI doesn’t have that even though the ignition has it) and start the motor. Cranks up easily and runs fine and idles fine. No complaints.

Go run around the lake or bay a little while, shut the motor off and fish or whatever a moment or 2...and it doesn’t want to start as easy...sometimes I can get it to start up on 2 or 3 cranks or so...it fires up and then dies...seems like a fuel issue. Other times I crank it and can quickly get it in gear and it runs. Finally, other times I can’t get it going, so I press the gear bypass button on the binacle and give it some throttle while in neutral and it will start up revved up and I idle it back down and it runs out fine from there.

When it won’t start, I’ve checked the bulb and it seems primed, but will double check next time I’m out.

I’ve read and been told a variety of things and am hoping to get more clarity here. Some folks have said it could be fuel leaking out of the injector and making it too rich and by opening the throttle is actually allowing air in to allow it to fire up...others mentioned an idle adjustment that maybe set appropriately for cold start up but not right for when it’s at temp...

Another forum I am reading about the ECM regulating the fuel enrichment based on engine temp...and so I am wondering if that could be off somehow...

Any how, it is more of an annoyance at this point and is something I’m kind of familiar having to deal with old cold carb 2 strokes...but it seems there is an issue that needs to be addressed.

I had it in the shop months ago and dropped way way too much money to have a miss chased through every coil and plug to finally just get a new set of plugs. I will be talking with the shop about this issue as it has persisted since I got it back, but at the time service times and availability were weeks and weeks due to covid boating. I figured I would check all options before working it with them...

Sorry for the long post. Thanks in advance.

Replaced the bulb, seem to still kind of have the issue. Need to go out some time on it off the muffs though...
