I was doing some work in the school district up there about 8-10 years ago and some of the locals directed us to this church where they served BBQ. It was mostly black folks there and had an older black gentelmen outside on the pit (BBQ pit, not pulpit) and it was some **** good BBQ. I don't know if that was Mt. Zion or not but I would highly recommend it.

Thats the place. Back in the day, they charged $10-$12 for all you could eat BBQ..... We would hit that place after a few holes @ Outlaw Gap golf course.. (Theres another Huntsvegas spot) Im not sure if there is such a thing a "BEEF POISONING" but we always left there feeling something.....

$5 golf!! http://www.worldgolf.com/courses/usa/texas/huntsville/outlaw-gap-golf-course-public.html

$10 BBQ http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/301/148...1484162/restaurant/Texas/New-Zion-Missionary-Baptist-Church-Barbeque-Huntsville

Murski's is gone, Mt Zion is not very good anymore, you have to have a pass at the Lagoon, and the Texan's chicken fried staek isn't wonderful anymore either. Now the Farmhouse is good, State park is fun (hot this time of year), Prison Museum, Veterans Museum, Sam Houston's Home, Able's Gun Store and range, McKensies BBQ, Mama Janito's mex food... I live 20 miles from here and work in town.

Dang, Murskis is gone?! Always a good time at the all girls party right when school started. Got jolly at the fox more than I can remember. No bueno about cafe Texan and the chicken fried steak going down hill, used to be so good. Zack's always had an awesome chicken fried chicken sandwhich, thing was huge. For a really good meal, and I mean dinner, go to The Homestead on 19th, best food in town but its probably the most pricey as well. All homemade, everything, down to salad dressings, very good food (used to be a cook there). Blue lagoon was fun til you get kicked out, awesome water and cliff jumping.
Class of 05', I get back up there about once every other year and that place is completely different everytime I see it.

Cafe Texan is terrible, if you think that's a chicken fried steak, you should cut up your TDL and go back to yankeeland.
Murskies closed a couple years ago.
The homestead is excellent.
The state park's lake fed me for most of college
Sam Houston is fun to see.

They let out prisoners around 3 over by the walls unit. That's worth watching. Hookers and old lady's everywhere and all sort of characters.

The church's bbq went down hill after the ol man passed away.
The best kolache place on Texas (Mamma's kitchen door) closed and Billy passed away.
Sam football baseball are fun to go watch in season.
Mckinzey's is better than average plus they have a good burger.
If nothing else take some shades and watch all the smoking hotties walk around campus...

If you want a real hole in the wall place Down home cooking out on 190 going towards Livingston is the best **** place you will eat at around there. You only get a couple of items to choose from but man they are good.

There also used to be a place out on 75 going towards Madisonville by the truck stop. I think it was named Ruby's or something like that can't remember.

OH **** I forgot about that place. YEAH it's fantastic!
The Junction shut down about a year ago I think. It was starting to get run down pretty bad when I left and they finally shut the doors.
It was bad when i was there...

SHSU Class of 86. Best memories I've ever had. Loved that town. Is The Junction still open? We ate at Mt. Zion's back when it was in the little wood church. As Haute Pursuit said, the Old Shenanigan's across from the campus was the bomb. Got thrown out of there too many times to remember, but also pulled some nice little coeds out of there as well!

Yeah 17th Street was cool! I was class of '91. If you were there 4 years like me you may remember a place called Variations. It was in Downtown.

Also, there was Kat's and Oasis. Now was Oasis where Kats was or was Oasis 17th Street? Can't remember.

Great memories. Wish I could go back, I would have been more aggressive with the coeds, LOL!

Prison rodeo died in the 1980's or late 1970's not sure but has been gone a lo g time.

Spent more time at the fox but 17th street on occasion for change of pace.

Zach's is pretty good but not the same once they moved from the old house on Sam Houston Ave.

If you haven't been to campus in the last 10 years its worth a stop. Great things happening on campus.

Class of '94 & 2007
