Curado 200G7 spool corrosion?
I had difficulty removing the spool from my Curado 200G7 recently and upon further inspection, I noticed some discoloration and slight roughness on left spool rim (see attached photo). Right spool rim was smooth and ok. What likely cause this and what is best method to fix? Other than above, spool rolls fine w/o wobble so appears to be ok.

I'm not a metallurgist, but I can take a shot. The aluminum reel parts are anodized in order to form a corrosion resistant layer on the surface of the part. That anodized layer is super thin. It looks like the anodized layer has worn off allowing the non-anodized aluminum underneath to corrode. Could be your spool is rubbing on the reel body when the spool is spinning. If the anodized layer on the reel body (where the edge of the spool rides) is still intact, then you can just replace the spool. You can also sand off the corrosion and it will get you by for a little while, but it will continue corroding.

lightly sand off edges (800 grit or higher) put some nail polish( lightly) around the edge

I was able to use Dremel, with felt barrel, to smooth a little bit and reel is casting much better. Not sure what tolerances are inside reel frame, but it did make a difference.
Can you advise as to where find an 800 grit buffer wheel for Dremel as I was unable to find. Also, does nail polish provide slippery surface or protective film, or both? Btw, I was unable to find a replacement spool for this reel, so I was wondering if anyone has a spool compatibility list for Curado 200G7 with other Shimano reels. |
