I went on an invite out to Sonora this weekend and after lots of sitting in a blind, driving around the lease, and stalking animals through the brush - I bagged a fat axis buck.
Pics tomorrow when I get them in email from the ranch owner.
in the meantime - I need a taxidermist recomendation. His rack is nowhere near perfect, but it is unique as you'll see from the pics. I want to euro mount it. I also want to have the hide made into a rug since there is only an entrance wound and no exit wound. The bullet ended up lodged in the opposite shoulder just under the skin.
The meat is quatered and in an ice bath to be processed later this week. Am I nuts for thinking of doing the butchering myself? I would hate to drop it of at a processor only to have my meat swapped for someone elses - or outright "lost". Not saying all processors are lyin' cheatin' scoundrels...but we've all heard stories, and I don't want to be a victim.
I forgot my camera - so I have to wait till I get them in email.
you would think in a 550 acre high fenced pen you could find 40 blackbuck milling around. NOT! We saw one group of about 10 and another of about 5. After jumping the first group - 2 of us stalked them on foot while the jeep circled around and they still disappeared. Whoever said the jump and run was right!
The second group only had one doe - and I was not in a postion to take a shot without hitting a male (and I didn't want to write a $1500 check ) - one of the other guys did take a shot at her and missed.
The axis did not come from the high fence, it was free-roaming on the remainder of the ranch.
Jimmy Harding at Walker County Hardware in Huntsville does the cleanest, whitest and just the best I have ever seen Euro mounts. I've seen and done lots of em and he is by far the best. He uses some real neat natural cedar panels that he gets from a local crafter also. I could do the skin for you if you happen to Huntsvlle with the skull.
James Quinters had done several european mounts for me and does great work at a reasonable price...He's at J&m Sausage on Steubener-Airline, next to Hooks Airport...281 379-5551.........Capt. Wayne
Great job bagging that Axis SC. Here's a link to a friend of mines website that does Taxidermy...he did Robo's trout last year and has done all of my deer and many of my friends. His contact info is on there. www.texaswildlifeimpressions.com.
dunno - maybe has something to do with him being drunk off his arse in that photo
