what is you opinion on the best barrel scrubber or way to get the rust spots off of your shot gun barrel....it not a big deal but I would like to keep this gun as nice as possible...Im not getting results with the brand im using.. thanks
When i hunted the bay, i would pour liquid cooking oil onto a sock then i woud rub it all ove my gun!!, let the oil dry then rub it down again. The oil impregnates the steel and prevents it from rusting. This process works very well and does not leave you gun all sticky and gooey as one may think.
The other alternative would to have it dipped in one of those fancy wetland colors, that works well also. Just keep the deet off of it, will take the coating off.
gaftop, I've got an 18 year old Mossberg Model 500 that spent it's first 15 years huntin the bays and salt marsh and still looks reeeaaaallly good! I kept the inside of my softcase sprayed with Remoil and carried the stuff with me on every hunt. Once we got setup and I pulled my gun out I would coat it with the oil, and if it got dunked during the hunt it would get sprayed down again, and another final spray down prior to slidin it back in the case for the trip home. Of course I'd clean it and wipe it down back at the house. It still to this day has virtually no rust on it.
One of my ex-military buddies would use a pencil eraser to remove the little spots of surface rust on his gun and then oil it up. Seemed to do a pretty decent job.
Good Luck! And let us know if you find anything else that does the trick!
I did something similar. Have an old mossberg that i sanded down, taped it all up, and the sprayed the whole thing down with truck bedliner. Its an ugly mother, but it dont rust...and it kills ducks!
If it's a gun that you paid good money for, I would look into getting it powder coated. There's a lot of companies around the Houston area that will do it for around $150-200.
My duck gun is a Rem. 870, so I don't really care if it gets rusted or banged up. When I get rust spots, I hit the rust with steel wool and oil it up. Then, I'll put a heavy coat of oil over all metal parts before and after each hunt.
I use Breakfree CLP (Wal-Mart) on all my guns. Rem-Oil works great too. Use a little 0000 steel wool, the spry with the Breakfree and wipe it down. Be sure to swab the inside of the barrel too.
Get the gun dipped in Teflon and use lots of Corrosion X if your a regular. If your not a regular down in the salt water using lots of Corrosion X works just fine.
