Academy sells a remote controlled light for tree stands. I always thought it might work well for hogs at night. It's only about $30. Not sure how bright, but probably good enough to see. Just a thought.
Ultramatic offers one http://www.ultramaticfeeders.com/hog.htmlI've heard of people using low voltage rechargeable lawn lights and attaching them to the feeder. Don't have any first hand knowledge of either.
I went to home depot and bought a 3 led landscape spotlight set. It had a solar panel with it. I also bought a plastic box that they use for electrical connections that is about 8-10" square. I mounted a light on each of the two sides and bottom and the solar panel on the top. It has worked real well for about a month so far. Just enough light to see under the feeder without running anything off. If I can get some pictures I will post them. Oh and it only cost like $45 to build. Dean
Right now I'm experimenting with a red light since my green light didn't perform well recently.
We bought one of those floating fishing lights, the kind with the styrofoam around it, colored the clear lense red with a magic marker and so far it works just fine. We attach it to a marine deep cycle battery and we've placed a solar panel in the tree near the feeder to keep the battery charged.
This cheap little setup may be the ticket as we've not observed any animal being spooked by the red light.
I use two solar landscape lights on the top of the feeder. I screwed them to a piece of wood and then used a ratching strap to attach them to the sides of the feeder. I set the solar panel on top of the feeder. I wrapped them with clear green plastic as they say hogs can't see green they work awesome.
You can get a three solar landscape lights set at Lowes for $43.00 and mount them on your feeder. They come on at sun set and turn off at dawn and they will burn all night long. after about a week the pigs don't pay the lights any attention at all. They work great and the price is right.
how about this....the emergency lights buildings use when the power goes out...just a Idea, they run off batterys and i could put some paint or red plastic on the bulbs??????????
I'm not sure if the landscape lights will give off the amount of light I need. So far this floating fishing light is doing exactly what I want, but I'll sure check into them. Thanks.
Been doing it several ways so far the best I have found is a little 3 AAA LED light clipped to the feeder when hunting. Does not spook the hogs and just enough light to shoot by. I have been using a red spotlight mounted on my scope, got it at Academy for $60.00, and it doesnt bother the hogs either. Killed two last week with back to back shots under the same feeder. Some money invested in your project with save you money in the long run.
I would go with led rechargable yard lights on the feeder for a permenant set up. Trying that now with a set from on one feeder and it works just have not been able to stay in the blind long enough past Deer time.
My cousin has what is called a Hawg Lite it goes on your bow where the stabilizer goes and has a button you press with one of your fingers so you can shoot hogs. Has a red lens and a blue lens. Works too. He has killed a few that way.
