Bastrop Not Hot
April at Lake Bastrop usually spells HOT FISHING . . . . but not so hot this year. Jim Darnell and I fished this morning and managed 7 bass on the fly, and 11 more on conventional tackle, in a hard six hours of fishing. The bass were much smaller than normal, with the average size between 13 and 16 inches. A couple of three pounders gave a good fight.
A couple of other noteworthy events were the snake-a-thon roundup (won by yours truly), and a raft of at least five hundred white pelicans that allowed us to drift into the middle of their flock and take pictures.
We talked with one of the LCRA officials, at the South Park office, and we were told the lake was cooler than normal, due to lack of power generation. Warm temperatures throughout the winter season eliminated the need to fire up the generators, hence very little water passed through the cooling system. The hot water discharge from the electrical generators usually push lake temperatures up.
In addition to the cooler water, a muddy sediment coats much of the eel grass in the lake. Water flowing into Lake Bastrop, during periods of heavy rainfall, have clouded up the water and reduced sunlight penetration.
It might be wise to call ahead and check on fishing conditions before making a trip.
