Catalina S80 Aluminum Tanks

I'm rather new to scuba and in the process of getting everything I need. Looking at ebay at some Catalina S80 tanks and the price is making me wonder if they are good tanks or not. What are your opinions on these tanks and the prices of them?? I've included a shortcut to the seller that has them on Ebay.

That is a pretty sweet deal for a new tank, with free shipping. Since the manufacture date is 2011, they must be offloading old inventory. Their website has the same tank listed for $175. Hydro's run $20-$35 and you will need a new one every 5 years per DOT.

Tanks tend to hold their value well. You will pay $80-100 for a used tank with a born on date after 2000, with a current hydro + VIP, boot, and dust cap.

Unless you go steel, your options for S80 are Catalina and Luxfer. Both are good, although some older Luxfers (pre 1989) had issues. I have never has issues with my Catalina's. They seem a tad heavier than my Luxfers.

The picture shows a k-valve with the removable insert to switch from yolk to din - nice feature.

Unless you find some used tanks locally (craigslist) in the $75-80 range with current VIP and a hydro with more than 3 years left, I would jump all over those. Even then you may get an abused tank with unseen internal corrosion and a valve that needs rebuilt.

Stick with the simple brushed, natural, or shot blast finish, as painted looks good for about 1 year.

Don't forget some valve dust caps (approx $1.50 each) (aka full/empty indicators), and some tank boots ($7-8 each).
