Conservation Crossfire/Fisheries Issues A place for everyone interested in fisheries discussion from a regulatory/political standpoint. The laws surrounding fishing and our fisheries are changing, and this is the place to learn about changes on the horizon. Please keep it civil. We can disagree with one another, without becoming disagreeable.

I meet my brother in Galveston and we ferry over to Gilchrist. We bring extra trash bags and spend the first 20 minutes cleaning the area around us before we set the poles up. We always catch fish @ Rollover, i.e. flounder, croaker, reds and trout. Enjoy fishing @ Rollover Pass!

why not fence the place in and charge people $5 to fush the pass on both sides.. take this money and use it for the up keep of the area... i would totally agree if they did so.. only if the money was used for that reason and not like the parking pass bs

Build a LONG pier on the bay side!! Add night lights, bait, and concessions and you've got a winner! 90% of the time there's no quality fish in the muddy sandy rolling surf unless you want shark, bull reds, etc.

First off...let me say I don't know if closing it is a good thing, or a bad thing.

But, I'd like to share one thing my Dad told me. He said that before Rollover was opened there were grass flats in East Bay and the fishing was outstanding....for whatever that's worth.

And since this issue has come up it makes me think of Baffin Bay, and the Laguna Madre. Those two areas don't get much salt water exchange at all since passes are far, and few between for those systems....and the fishing is outstanding.

So....carry on

Jimbo showing some "iggorance" again

This was a PRIVATE cut that severly impacted East Bay built with monies allocated from private individuals waaay back before there were scientific methods used to verify impacts --

The ICW now moves water thru East bay and out SABINE Pass which at one time WAS natural - East Bay was ISOLATED and a rich estuary BEFORE Rollover was constructed

CLOSING this pass will IMPROVE fisheries in east bay, along with re-establishment of oyster beds which do a **** sight more cleaning up our mess than anything --

I fished Rollover many times - it was a good fishing hole no doubt -- but for overall benefits to GB system, closing an ill advised MAN MADE cut is the best outcome --

Heck another IKE and Gilchrist may be called PASS Gilchrist anyway

As it stands today, EGB is one of the most prolific bays on the coast not only for sport fishermen but also commercial shrimping, crabbing, and oystering. After closing of ROP, look for lilly pads, mudcats, carp, etc. in the upper end. The marine environment will definitely take a bad hit.

Actually, from what I understand East Bay isn't in nearly as good of shape as it should be and Rollover Pass is a prime problem.
