I fish two 209s that cast pretty well. Remove the spools and fasten the handle side shaft to your power drill (you might want to pad the shaft with masking tape to prevent scratching). While running the drill, buff the opposite shaft end with steel wool until shiny smooth. Reverse and buff the opposite shaft end. Clean the reels really well and oil (not grease) the shaft/bushing pairings, and all moveable parts of the level wind with 3-in-one oil. I think you'll find this procedure to add a few yards to your cast. Don't forget to tweak the tension adjustment screws for both the spool and level wind. I keep the level wind tension just tight enough so that it will work and the spool tension just tight enough that the line doesn't slip between the spool and frame on the cast. Beyond that, about all you could try is to mag the reel. I haven't tried that yet.

If PEOPLE are casting a 209 with a 5 oz weight and another 8 or more oz.s of bait on it against the wind much farther than 90 yards, then I better get out and measure my cast again.
What you probably need more than anything is practice.
Those reels cast pretty darn far right out of the box.
With a level wind reel , it only gets so good.
One way is to bait up and cast down the beach but into the wind as much as possible and then measure it. Have a cast master do it as well and see how you fair.
Remember standing in waist deep water doesn't help a cast either.

I started to not comment on people casting "a lot farther" than 90 yards with a 209, but will since you opened the subject. I normally use a 6 oz spider weight and try to keep my bait about the same weight. I also use a pulley style leader that is about 2.5' to 3' in the casting position. I've always thought I was a pretty fair caster, but I'd be hard pressed to cast my 209s over 100 yards, under ideal conditions. With 15 to 20 mph winds in my face, in waist to chest deep water, I'm probably getting about 50 to 80 yards.
I think Junkyardhog maybe has been reading about some of the tournament casters chunking 200 yards. I've asked Nick (from Breakaway) repeatedly how far he can honestly cast with bait, under normal fishing conditions, and he has yet to answer. Maybe if we have any longcasters on this board, they can respond.

You wont like the 309 for casting its a backlashing machine.
The squider is a pretty good reel and casts well.
