Problem with Bantam 10XSG

The reel is 30+ years old. When I simply hold it in my hand and turn the handle, everything works fine. However, if I reach over with my thumb and put a little pressure on the spool (as if fighting a fish) the handle “skips” at irregular intervals.

I disassembled and cleaned the reel, and did some partially assembled testing. I noticed that when the skips occur, the yoke holding the pinion gear jumps away from the set plate, causing the pinion gear to lose contact with the drive gear (producing the “skip”). The yoke springs are in place, but do not appear to be strong enough to hold the yoke down in place. I stretched the springs just a little. That seemed to help slightly, but the skips still occur (a lot).

Was wondering if anyone had experienced this type of behavior and could suggest a cure (?). The reel has lots of sentimental value and I hate to see it sitting idle on the shelf.

Call Nutter Rod & Reel in Georgia. I bet he has a set of new yoke springs that he can sell you.
