I used my husband's Core last weekend. It was practically brand new. I cleaned it off after the weekend but I just noticed that the red spool has some rusted looking pitting on the edge. Is that normal with the Core's or is it something I did. Can I buy a replacement spool? Trying to repair it without his knowledge. He won't be happy. He has 2 reels and I have well, more than 2, and I ruined one of his. Help.
Either a user or manufacturing fault if the deposit is eating into the surface of the spool. I would check the spool and if it has not been scratched or bent, then the surface coating may be faulty. Probably need to take it to FTU for inspection.
If you rinsed the reel off after use then there should be no corrosion. If the spool was scratched then it can corrode quickly. You can either take the reel to FTU to have them look at it, or send the reel to us, or order a new spool.
I would put a little "Corrosion X" on it, soak it in fresh water, and if the rust looking pitting is still on there, I would take it in to a tackle shop for inspection. The Core is a GREAT reel, but you have to rinse it after every use. Good luck.
Took it to FTU and they said that it is probably from the braid getting wet and staying wet on the spool (even if it's freshwater). Shimano isn't covering it under warranty -- yet. $50 to replace the spool. I went ahead and confessed to my husband and I cleaned it up good and we will just live with it until maybe I can get Shimano to warranty it. It's only been used maybe 5 times and very light use but then again that saltwater is very corrosive.
