The three on one piece are a mallard/gadwall, blue wing teal/shovelor, and a black duck/mallard cross. I shot the b.d. mallard in Louisiana and the other two in Oklahoma. The one I am holding I also shot in Oklahoma, it is also a mallard/gadwall cross. I mounted these birds myself and thought some of you duck hunters would enjoy seeing my collection.
Well done on the mounts!! Some guys don't shoot a hybrid in their entire career, it's amazing that you've shot 4. I really like the Mallard/Gadwall in the last pic!!
I shot a Bluewing/Cinnamon Teal hybrid 2 seasons ago and I didn't even know it was a hybrid, just thought it was an immature Cinnamon Teal and cleaned it. Had a biologist see the pictures and correct me on my bird identification...Wow, I wish I would have kept that bird.

Thats a Cinnamon if I've ever seen one. Looks like everyone I have shot maybe not as dark but look @ that big beak. Biologist must have gone to ATM. LOL Good lookng birds.
I know that this is a STUPID question but what is a hybrid, and how do they occur? Or is it a taxidermist that does it for you? Sorry for the ignorance.
hybrids are when 2 different duck types mate and have offspring. kinda like when a horse and a donkey get it on. that's why they call them hybrid cars, because it's part gasoline, and part electric.
Tom, they occur the 'regular way" haha. They almost never occur between divers and puddle ducks, but happen in puddle ducks a fair amount. Drake mallards will hit anything, especially their cousins, the true Black Duck and the mottled duck. In fact, mallard hybridization is the main concern over the much smaller populations of blacks and mottleds, much as interbreeding with coyotes wiped out the red wolf in Texas.
Most common (seems like to me) are mallard + black or mottled, mallard+pintail, then pretty much mallard and everything else. Then teal interbreeding (cins and blues, esp). One of my clients shot a wigeon gadwall a few years ago. We were arguing which he was when my dog brought him back and he was both!
Iv'e shot one and clients have shot two (that I recognized) over the years. I am sure we shoot many which aren't obvious and never notice.
nice mounts. If you want to see mallard crosses just go to any local park with a lake.
