Saturday evening went out dove hunting with my son. Not many birds…I think they migrated on Thursday when the cold front came through. Anyway, after the dove hunt we ambushed a couple of feeders with no success. Went to dinner in town and came back to ambush the feeders again. This time success!!!
What's cool about this feeder is that it is easy to ambush. Basically there is a dirt road on the ranch that has an over grown field on the south side and a cultivated field on the north side. At the end of the road you turn right 90 degrees into an open field and the feeder is 50 yards from that corner. When I say over grown… think of 12 foot tall rag weed and mesquite trees. Saturday night the wind was blowing from the south so the pigs under the feeder could not hear or smell us as we approached.
So we drive down the road (without lights on) and stop about 150 yards from the corner. Grab our gear and quietly walk down the road to the corner. I peak around the corner through the night scope and there is a large sounder under the feeder. I see 4 large sows and a gaggle of piglets feasting on my special mixture of deer corn and secret sauce.
I pick out the largest sow and squeeze the trigger. I only had the 10 round clip in the AR-10. After the clip was empty there were 3 good size sows laying dead. What was funny…when the shooting started they all started running like cockroaches when the lights come on. The closest exit to the "overgrown" area was to my right (the east) which is where the big sows started running. But some of the young ones ran to the left. I was shooting at them as they ran left. A couple of seconds later they came back running to the right. I was shooting at them then too. It's hard to hit those little ones at full run.
Saturday night the moon was about 50% so the night scope worked perfectly.
After shot number 10 my son says, "Dad, you're empty." Way 2 cool.
One of the sows was hit behind the eye with the exit wound out the forehead. Left a hole the size of a softball that took a lot of grey matter with it…nasty but effective. The 150 grain 308 causes lots of damage when it hits its target.http://www.texasboars.com/photopost/albums/userpics/normal_ICAM0002.JPG
