I am no bow expert but it's like buying a pair of shoes...you gotta get one fitted for you. As long as you know what you need I don't think it would matter if it was brand new or a used one from someone lookin' to change.
If you go used I wouldn't go more than 2 years old. I bought my 2006 Allegiance used and it's been fantastic. No way to recommend bows for you without a price range, but no matter what you should shoot as many as you can at your local shops before making a decision.
