J- I just thought I'd let you know I shot that little Rossi I bought for my daughter yesterday, I shot some rem. 55 grn. to get it on paper, then swithced to win. 55 grn. to tweek it down, finally switched to Fed. 55 grn. soft point to get a group, here's the key, get some Hoppes #9 degreaser and spray the heck out of the trigger to remove all the cosmolean(sp?), after every 3 shots clean the barrel with the stuff, I found this will help the grouping better, still limited to what you can do with the rifle, I could only get on the average 1.5" to 2" groups, but what do you expect, I only paid $215.42 for the thing, if she enjoys hunting as much as I think she will, I'll get her a different rifle next yr..
Way to go dad..........Ive got a 5 year old daughter and im sure i will be right on your heels before too much longer. My gal loves the outdoors and huntin.Keep up the good work........
Fed. 55 grn. soft point, I'll post a pic. tomm. of the grouping, my main point is keep that short barrel clean, still with a clean barrel it has its limitations, but for shooting a pig or deer @ close range, no problem, we have 2 feeders and blinds set up at the lease for kids, 40 yd. shots max., I have 2 daughters one 11 yrs. old and one 7, my son is 14 but he shoots with the big boys, last yr. he had to shoot a doe for Yazzoomike cause for some strange reason Yaz could'nt get out of bed! hope this helps..
My friend has the same gun, it dint shoot that great at first, we put a better scope on it and it helped a lot, then we shot it and shot it, it finally broke in and is shooting great, under an inch at a 100.
Give it some time, the groups will get better

You mentioned putting a better scope on it, did you buy the one that came with the BSA scope from Academy as a combo? That's the one we have and I'm just not sure about that scope. It doesn't have any model numbers or names at all on it, just says BSA.
Have the same gun in a .243. Echo the "keep the barrell clean" sentiments. I did speak with a gunsmith about the trigger and he didn't feel like he could do much to improve the accuracy. I bought some cheap Win 100 grain ammo for the .243 and it shoots better than more expensive stuff I tried.
Thanks AggieWes, you answered my question before I asked it.
Last month I bought my kids the Rossi that comes equipped with a .22LR, 20 ga., and .243 barrel. Haven't taken it to the range yet but was wondering what grain bullet I should start with in .243.

yes sir thats the one he bought, BSA is junk. Anything will be better. He put a busnell on it. I tell you whats a pretty decent scope, is the Tasco World class. Not expensive at all, I put one on a .22 hornet NEF single shot, I like it a lot.
Thanks zrex, I think I'll definitely get a new scope for it then, if nothing else it'll boost MY confidence. When he shot his brother's .243 he got 8 shots in before his shoulder hurt and had a couple bulls eyes and the rest within a 6" circle other than one flyer so I was really surprised with this Rossi when he was all over the target. I'll try that Federal ammo, keep that bore clean, and swap that scope out. If all that doesn't work I'm buying something else. LOL
shoot it and shoot it, it needs to break in, groups will tighten up.
We were pretty disapointed with his, at first, but now the thing is shooting great.
It probably has about 200 now. remingtons work well in his. I would at least put a 150 through it then start trying different ammo and see which one your gun likes. But put a scope on it first, a trigger job might not be a bad idea either.
Turns out his problem was not the scope, it's that dang trigger. We put a decent Bushnell scope on there and he's shooting exactly the same as with the old BSA. I watched very closely and I can see him struggling with that trigger and there's movement right as it fires. I don't think there's anything I can do about that except for to get him into his brother's .243 asap and in the mean time keep his shot distance very close.

Hey Leemo, is this the Rossi you can pick up at Academy? If so ... what are your thoughts having purchased one? I was thinking of picking one up for my 8 year old son. Don't want to spend a fortune on a rifle for him, but I don't want to skimp to the point the gun doesn't work very well and leaves him dissappointed?
ZEN- I don't want to bash anybody for buying the gun or make somebody feel like they made a bad choice, my opinion I would'nt buy another one, several reasons- the trigger is extremely hard and crisp, the scope is eehh!, the barrel is short (just like shooting a pistol, so any movement at all on the shooters end is unforgiving) the positives- the gun is a good starter for close shots, it won't break you, cheap to shoot, and after my daughter sat in the stand with me for 30 minutes she was ready to go(13 going on sixteen, brush her hair, do her nails etc...) so let me once again apologize to anyone who has this rifle, I AM NOT trying to make you feel bad, just giving my opinion... LK

I bought one and got rid of it after 7 months or so.
Did not shoot worth a darn.(243)
I got him a Rem 700 sps and havnt looked back.....
But it was twice as much money...
We have the Rossi with the .223 and 20 gauge barrels. Got the combo w/out the scope, put an inexpensive Simmons Deerfield on it. It has shot great from day one. We are using the 64 grain federal classic rounds (which I cannot find anymore). The trigger is stiff, but my son started shooting it at age 7 and has never had a problem. He has killed 4 deer and a hog with it. Looking back I would purchase it again. Hope my daughter will get interested soon...
I bought a 243 Rem. 700 synthetic stock at Academys for $314. For $100 more you have a rifle that will last a lifetime. At first it was giving 1.5 groups after about 4 boxes of ammo and work to make the trigger lighter, its shooting 3/4".
I visited Academy on 59 & gessner and the still had some youth models in stock.
A friend of mine bought a .223 a single shot rifle such as the Rossi that is made my New England Arms that shoot 1" groups or better. barrelrell is a little thicker that Rossi's and the gun overall has better quality.
Kiko, you sure that's $314? I looked at a Rem youth at Academy and could swear it was $429. It was the next cheapest youth model they had after the Rossi.
Your probably looked at the 700SPS which is the newer model. I bought the 700ADL. The SPS replaced the ADL a year ago. Call Academy they might still have some is stock. http://www.mseanbrowne.com/adl.html
Lee when you get tired of that thing call me an buy her a good gun.
