I have a friend and outfitter in Alaska, He likes the 308 and the 270 for what ever he hunts but for his shaking customers he like to see more gas. It is all about what you like and what you are good with. Calibers are like spices everyone has their choice.
The best over all rifle for north american game is the one the shooter feels most comfortable shooting. But my personal favorite is my .300 SAUM. Little kick, plenty of punch.
I'll take my .257 stw. How can you go wrong with a .25 bullet nestled on the end of a 7mm stw case? Plenty of velocity. Plenty of energy. Very little drop. Even out to 500 yards. You just have to like to hand load.
