Something Ate My Basil

I have tiny black insects all over my basil. It's been eaten and decimated.
It looks like maybe thrips. How do you control insects on something you eat fresh, sevin dust?

If you plan on consuming the Basil, use insectisidal soap every 3-4 days, or spray the tops and bottoms of the leaves with a fine sharp water spray daily to wash the critters away.
