Mayfly Hatch

A friend wanted to fly fish the San Marcos river yesterday, so we hit the water after work and fished till dark. We paddled the river just above Staples and the fishing was awesome.

A few minutes after we launched, my fly wrapped around a grape vine (nothing new). As I tugged on the vine, a cloud of Mayflies filled the air. They were in my face, all over my shirt, and several fell into the water. Sunfish were popping them off the surface, right next to the kayak. It was like this for a couple of miles of river. I have only seen a hatch this prolific a couple of times before in over twenty years on the river.

Sunfish and bass crashed the San Marcos worm, poppers, and Crystal Minnows with abandon all afternoon and evening.

Let's go fishing.
