Curado 200E7 Holes in Spool

I just bought a pair of Curado 200E7's to replace an older Curado and a Cardiff. When I got them out to rig up I noticed the holes in the center of the spool and thought "Cool a place to tie off the line". My first clue should have been that the holes are partially blocked by some type of metal framework inside, but I went ahead and threaded the line thru a pair of them and as I was tightening the knot on some braided line it snapped. The edges of the holes in the spindle are so sharp that they cut Power Pro better than any scissors I have ever used ... grin! So I guessed they are not for tying off and are probably to reduce mass. I used the Power Pro tape and a noose knot and was in business just like in the past. I raise the issue here because I want to find out for certain. Thanks!
