30/378

Hello all. I was just wanting to know if anyone was doing any loading for the Weatherby 30/378. I have an Accumark that I purchased about 10 years or so ago, and have been hunting with it regularly. It performs well, but I cannot seem to get the groups I want. My best load is 115 gr. of H50BMG with Fed 215 primers, and Barns Tripple Shock bullets. It shoots around a 1.25" group. Don't get me wrong, none of the deer have complained, but I think it will shoot better. Trouble is, with 115 gr.s per shot, I don't want to do a lot of experimenting. Has anyone found a good load that they are proud of? Thanks in advance for any answers.

I shoot big ole hairy wildcats and can tell you that Hogdons US 869 is almost a 50bmg crossover and is a lot more consistent as far as velocity spreads are concerned and much, much, much cleaner burning. 50BMG is NASTY and tempermental. IF you know somebody with Load From Disk program, they can plug it in for you.. I would think that you could drop 2 grains off your BMG load and start back up with the 869 and be just fine -I run a 6.5mm STW and find that I have to clean it about every 15 rounds with BMG...Hope this helps and happy hunting...............

I thought about after it I had already posted about the powder issue, but if rifle is a factory Weatherby, then they are chambered with a lot of freebore and with the combination of Barnes and the freebore part of the equation, then I would seat bullets out as far as your magazine well will allow. Barnes are notorious for liking almost no "jump" into the lands...

How many rounds do you think you have down the tube? Faster your bullets the faster it eats your barrel, and the 30/378 is as hot as they come. Just a thought if its ten years old. I hunted with a guy(same ranch differnt part) in South Texas that had 2 of them one for him and one for his son. He really thought highly of them.

I think you are confused about the Barnes and "no jump". I know on their publications regarding reloading they suggest big jump and then back up.

Here is a site I found when I got my 338-378 Accumark. Its kinda small and a little slow but has alot of very good Weatherby info. I havent frequented it in a while but it seems like it is picking up and growing.

http://www.weatherby.dk/content.php

I havent shot my Accu since I had some work done, but it shot 2 to 2 1/2" with factory 200gr ballistics. The crown was not square, the head space was off, and the action had been moving in the stock even though it is all alum pillar blocked from the factory, and it wasnt sitting exactly square in the stock. When my GS told me what he had found I was disappointed, Thats the whole reason I bought a Weatherby, for quality. The round is awesome though. We are going to start handloading very soon. You might have yours checked out. I hope this little info helps. I am learning this as I go.

You did not say what grain and brand of projectile your chunking. I reload for my hunting partners 30-378 and I reload retumbo but I can't recall the charge at the moment, with a 180gr nosler accubond. Deadly but I cannot get a group smaller than 1.5-1.75" out of it Beats a 3" group with weatherby ammo! But he kills out to 650yards every year in Colorado. What a cannon. I reload for and shoot my remington 300 rum and it will out group .5-.75. his weatherby...At half the price to boot. I believe 30-378 shoots more accurate with a larger pill
