The Tohatsu was designed for hard use for commercial boats for one. Tohatsu and the etec are know running with the same technology except Tohatsu has been using it longer than etec. I do know of a few people that have been having problems with the etec motors. Dont know a single person that has had any issues with Tohatsu motors. There is a lot of people out there that are scared of the Tohatsu do to the fact they dont know much about it. Cause they don't advertise like the other outboard companies do. I read an article in one of my fishing mags. they were comparing all the outboards to each other. They mentioned about the Tohatsu motor how people think it is some off brand motor here in the states. During there testing it out performed all other motors on the market. Wish I remember what Mag. I read that article in sorry. Call local outboard repair shops and ask them about them it will surprise you. I also talked to Commercial guys and they would tell me that Tohatsu was the best they ever ran on there boats.

I was going to go with an Etec 75 on my babycat intill I did some research and saw the Tohatshu was the way to go and I got a 90 for cheaper than the 75 etec. I am very very hard on my babycat and motor LOL just ask Donny at Transport I push it to its limits and then some.

Sounds like you have nothing but good things to say about your motor. I would have to say the same about my Etec 60. I’ve had it on my 14.5 cat for a year or so and haven’t had any issues whatsoever. I am not one who is scared to push my boat to its limits as well. I mainly fish the Galveston/Freeport area and don’t think twice about going just about anywhere. Shell is the only thing I try to avoid.

Well I hope that etec holds up for you to me for the most part engines are mechanical equipment that is ran in saltwater. Some will never give you problems no matter what brand and others will just the way it is. Just cause one person has all kinds of issues doesn't mean you will.

I fish mainly freeport and Matty area myself and my motor lives in the mud it doesn't know how to act when its in pure water LOL

I fished Corpus this past weekend prefishing for the XRT and still found lots of nasty mud to put her into GO FIGURE. Going back this weekend to look around some more.

Good luck if you are fishing the upcoming tourney in Corpus. Maybe we can hook up and do some fishing at some point.

200 plus hours on my 50 E-tec and no problems yet. The 40, 50 and 60 E-tecs have a stout lower unit too, very stout.

I'd get the 60 YAMAHA 2-stroke. I ran a '99 for nine years fishing almost every day and never had a major problem. It's also the lightest. Bullet proof!
